La'el Collins to be questioned in shooting death of ex-girlfriend

http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2015/sto...year-old-woman

Quote:
Police are seeking to question La'el Collins following the shooting death of a pregnant woman last week, but the former LSU offensive lineman is not considered a suspect, Baton Rouge police Lt. Jonny Dunnam told ESPN.

Brittany Mills, 29, is believed by police to be a former girlfriend of Collins. Police said Collins is not believed to be a suspect in the shooting, only that they want to talk to him to see if he can provide them with information.

Collins' attorney, Jim Boren, told police his client is in Chicago getting ready for the NFL draft. But Boren told ESPN he has been in constant contact with the lead detective on the case and he spoke with the district attorney Tuesday.

"We took the investigation seriously," Boren said from his offices Tuesday. "We've tried to rule him out as a suspect. We're going to provide that information to the police, and ultimately [Collins] will sit down and talk to them. But the timing is poor."

Mills was found shot to death in her apartment Friday night by police, who rushed her to the hospital, where her infant was delivered.

Boren said he has retained the services of a private investigative firm to help him prove that Collins was not close to Mills' home when she was murdered.

"We have identified where La'el was the day the lady was murdered to establish he was nowhere around," Boren told ESPN. "We have offered to give names, witnesses who can vouch for his whereabouts that day until after the woman's body was discovered. We believe that when [police] have verified that information, that they will rule him out as a suspect in the homicide, just as I believe he should be."

You don't owe the police your complete attention and the fact of the matter is that they're not interested in you clearing your name. The police are looking to make an arrest. They don't come right out and say that, but if they can get you to answer a question poorly, they'll gladly turn their sights on you.

Guilty or innocent, lawyer up. At that point, that guy should take most of the bullets for you. More than money is on the line for La'el Collins right now and being cavalier in some misguided attempt at posthumous chivalry is just going to get him in trouble.

And truthfully, I'd probably use a 3rd on the guy.

The Chiefs blew it when they fell into this trap w/r/t Vontaze Burfict (who'd look amazing alongside DJ).

Even if you're more risk averse than me and don't want to use a 3rd or 4th on him, why the hell wouldn't the Chiefs use a 5th? It's a free pick and worse case scenario is that he killed that woman and you cut him. Hell, the Chiefs are going to end up cutting a couple of their draft picks anyway.

It's an absolute no-brainer to use a comp pick on this guy if he falls that far. Didn't the Chiefs get a 6th for a bum like Edgar Jones? A 5th round comp pick is nothing; use it on the guy that could end up anchoring the right side of your line for the next 5 years...y'know, provided he didn't kill a woman. If he doesn't, you're not out much.

Collins falling out of the draft is another example of how NFL GMs car much much more about not rocking the boat and keeping their jobs than actually taking a risk to acquire talent.
