Tipping for services...

Not like restaurant tipping for the waiter, but tipping gardeners, postman, house cleaners, etc. Do you do it, and generally how much?

This is the first year we've paid a guy to handle our lawn. It's a business, but he's the only guy doing it. What's appropriate? Is cash preferred, or is a personal gift (wine, homemade goodies, or something) better?

That falls under the "unless they are a total screw up" category.

I got a lot of tips when I was a paperboy when I was a kid. I also loved it when people would leave Christmas presents out for me when I delivered Christmas morning. Used to get a lot of candy left out for me the day after Halloween, too. That was awesome.

I doubt people give many tips anymore since you just mail the payments into the company (I had to go house to house to collect).

So much this. I got sweet tips from my paper route back in the day, mostly from older folks. That was a nice perk to an overall shitty middle school job.

Government employees such as postal workers should not be allowed to accept any type of gratuity. Pretty much goes to equity for other government employees such as police, building inspectors, zoning officials, utility workers, etc. who may be judged by the appearance of providing special treatment because of receipt of a gift. Basically, think of it this way - "If I don't tip them then is my service reduced in any way?". If the answer is "Yes" than you are a victim of extortion. Report them and they are probably in big trouble or out of a job. Too much liability accrues to the employer, especially governments, when this occurs. Private sector maybe not so much because you can fire them as a service provider whereas you can't fire the government as a monopolistic service provider.

In the private sector, I always tip food staff at restaurants and anyone who is in a low paying and/or part-time job who excels at their work for me.

When I started, the paper was $3 a month and I made more from tips than I did from selling papers. Then, in one year it went from $3 to $10.50 and my tips pretty much dried up.

We get mail from other neighborhoods regularly, she leaves Certified Mail in the box because she's too lazy to come to the door - hell, she's not delivered packages for DAYS after they were confirmed "on the truck" because she didn't want to get off her ass. Our subdivision has over 150 complaints against her this year, and she still has a job.
I don't beleive that I have spoken a single word to my mailman or garbageman in 11 years.

Do you want to tip them? If so, do it.

If you don't want to tip them then don't tip them. Don't ask us.

Pick the shit up if you don't want to pay that extra $5 or $6 or whatever.
I tip the pizza guy. That's me. I don't expect others should have to feel obligated because there is a delivery charge instituted. Now that said, I absolutely think giving him a speech on why you're stiffing him is pathetic at best. Either own that you're an asshole, or fork over a couple of bucks to feel better about yourself. Telling him it's his companies fault that you're a cheap ass is chicken shit. Just own it. Now if a driver runs his mouth at you over it, then it's fair game and you should feel good about stiffing his ass. He doesn't make 3 an hour like servers do.

Did HVAC for 18 yrs and had one tip the entire time. A little old lady gave me 3 dollars to go get a milk shake on a hot summer day. Tried to refuse but she insisted. Always appreciated cookies or a drink if I was there for long. My brother lives in another state and his furnace broke down. He gave the guy a 20 dollar tip and I flipped out on him. heh
