Wish Me Luck

well, I haven't been on the Planet as much as I used to. It's been a busy month. I attended a Truck Driving school over the course of the past month and finished the school last Friday. After 15 years in telecom, I have had enough. Tired of the constant layoffs/project-based work....and actually grew to hate the actual work when it was there.

I have my Class A CDL test tomorrow morning at the DMV. I feel pretty confident. Others in my class who were at the same skill level as myself all passed their tests Monday and today. They all said that basically the 'tests' we were given at the school, were much more stringent than the DMV test - essentially, if you did well on the tests at school, you should have no problem at the DMV.

I've got a few pre-hire letters with companies; 2 of which will have me home every weekend. Another will have me home 3 days for 11 days out. My goal is to treat this upcoming year as an extension of my school/training, and try to get at least 12 months experience then start scouting 'local' jobs here in KC with a more predictable schedule, and hopefully decent hourly pay.

Congrats big trucker! Quite the weight off your chest, isn't it?

Should have worked at UPS. What you did for five weeks they force fed me in 3 days. By some minor miracle I passed my first time. They had us take the test with a pup trailer which is actually more difficult to back than a long box. I nailed ever backing test, even the parallel park which you'll NEVER do, expect the straight backing. WTF

So who are you looking to drive for? Don't say Swift. Friends don't let friends drive for Swift.

I was really pleased with my school. On my backing maneuvers, I only incurred a single point (13 was failing). I drew the 90 degree Alley Dock, instead of parallel. I probably could have finished the maneuver, but deciding not to risk being out of position, I pulled forward to get a tad more straight. So that was my only point. My driving test I only incurred 5 points out of 30, and nailed my pre-trip. when I was getting ready for my road test, the examiner pointed out another dude with a truck and trailer next to us .....where this was his THIRD time taking it and he had failed the pre-trip every time. WTF. Perfect example of a guy thinking "oh man, I can drive a truck....I don't need to know how to do a stinking pre-trip inspection". who knows if he passed today.

I'm 95% sure I'm going with a flat-bed company in Iowa called TMC Transportation. The home time and pay for a new driver is hard to beat. I'm sure there are better gigs out there once i have experience, but right out of the gate it's hard to beat.

Nice work, Dayze. If you pass children and they make the "blow your horn" signal, I hope you'll blow your horn.

Unfortunately, due to a prior incident, I'm no longer allowed to'blow my horn within about 100' of children.

Quick trucker tip -

Truck stops....
Love's is the best, far and away. If you can schedule your stops at those, so much the better.

Pilot's are hit and miss. Some are nice, some are nasty. Some guys call Pilot PeeLot because drivers will stop their rigs, open their doors, and piss right there. Some of them stink in the summer time, just saying.

TA's are pretty low rent, at least the ones I've been in. Stop there only if you have to.

Avoid Flying J's. Gross, gross places. Stop there only in case of breakdowns or if you can't hold off growing a tail any longer.

And also never, ever get on channel 19 on the CB while parked at one of these establishments and say "Here kitty kitty". You are not nor will ever be that desperate. Hope this helps.

I really liked Petro. Much more parking and their showers were the best.

And, Yeah T/As are hit and miss.
