Big Bang Theory: Main actors agree to $1 million per episode...

Not bad work if you can get it...

It's $1 million each for the actors per episode. The advertisers must pay ridiculous amounts to sell their products.

I tend to believe quality and popularity are mutually-exclusive concepts. Sometimes things struggle to find an audience. A lot of it is about marketing and finding a way to attract the herd. Hell, most of what people generally consider to be the best shows on television, historically speaking, are watched by about 6 people, when compared to a primetime viewship of literally anything on CBS, whether we're talking about something on HBO, or AMC, or FX. Is it wrong to say The Wire was good, when it never had a large audience? How about Mad Men? Breaking Bad? That show's finale, as much of an event as it was, had about half the viewers of a BBT finale. Does that mean it wasn't good? Did Game of Thrones only finally get 'good' this year when it reached the 18 million viewer/week point?

That's not to say that a show can't both be good and watched by a lot of people. But one doesn't necessarily guarantee the other. A lot of people are Raiders fans. That doesn't mean the Raiders are good. It just means a lot of people have bad taste.

Now, let's bring back The Adventures Of Briscoe County, Jr., and Firefly.
I actually watched Briscoe County, Jr.! Although that's about all that I remember about it. That I watched. And that Bruce Campbell was on it.

Firefly on the other hand was utterly destroyed by Fox. I'm not sure I can think of many shows that were worse-served by their network.

I'm pondering a tournament to see which two popular TV shows draw the most opposite audience. If I did that, would it be better to ...

... stick only within one genre (e.g., sitcom), or cross genres (sitcoms, dramas, reality, etc.)

...stick only with active shows, or include prominent shows that are in syndication

...stick only to network television, or go across the spectrum

I would lean toward sticking to network television just to avoid the corruption of some people not having HBO or Skinemax or whatever. I think that's a pretty solid recommendation. On the genre and timing, I could go either way, but I think it would be fun to compare sitcoms on a direct comparison basis and also include prominent sitcoms that are in syndication. You want shows that everyone has seen or could see.

Thoughts?

It's filmed in front of a live studio audience so the laughing you hear is the audience. However the more times the actors mess up their lines and scenes it may become less funny to the audience so they add more laughter during editing of the episode.

I was going to read your post, but my eye caught the two opening sentences before the rest, and there's just no way to reconcile them. I had to skip the post after that.

No way to reconcile saying that although something can be both good and popular, being good and being popular are mutually exclusive concepts?

Okay then.
