Mayock sees four options for the Chiefs at No. 1

Mayock sees four options for Chiefs at No. 1

Posted by Mike Florio on February 19, 2013, 9:02 AM EST

APOn Monday, preeminent draft guru Mike Mayock participated in a pre-Combine conference call that lasted more than 2.5 hours. Tirelessly answering question after question, Mayock demonstrated once again a computerized recall of names and teams and needs.

With plenty of interest focused on what will happen at the top of the draft, Mayock eventually was asked to identify the players he believes to be worthy of the first overall pick, held by the Chiefs.

Mayock said there are four: Alabama guard Chance Warmack; North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper; Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel; and Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher.

Warmack is Mayock’s preference. “People will tell me I’m crazy, that a guard can’t go No. 1,” Mayock explained. “I think he’s the best player in the draft, so I would argue that.”

The list doesn’t create the kind of sizzle to which we’ve become accustomed at the top of the draft. And for good reason. There are no quarterbacks regarded as worthy of being the first overall pick this year.

Mayock realizes that the Chiefs’ needs could be influenced by their decision regarding tackle Branden Albert (who could actually move to guard if a guy like Joeckel is drafted with the first pick). Still, Chiefs coach Andy Reid learned the hard way in 2012 the importance of having a high-end offensive live. With a cluster of high-quality blockers at the top of the draft and a rookie wage scale to keep the total cost far less than what it would be to sign Albert to a long-term deal, the Chiefs could opt for the lineman whom they decide they like the most.

And then they’d hope that the rest of the teams agree with G.M. John Dorsey’s assessment that none of the quarterbacks merit a first-round selection. Which would push all of the quarterbacks to the Chiefs at the top of round two.

We obviously need a qb. I'd say we will have a much better feel how it will play out after this weekend, draft slotting wise.

So I'll not jump to conclusion on that

Dorsey probably didn't even send one of his scouts in GB to a Geno Smith game all year...why would he?

Notice when he is talking about who thinks what about the QB class, he is talking about other people's evaluations and clearly said that he and Andy would be setting their own board because of how good they are at evaluating the position.

I can't wait to listen to John Dorsey and Andy Reid's interviews at the combine when asked directly about Geno.

But that's probably with whoever we bring in at qb
We've given Tyson Jackson FOUR years AND he's financially set us back.

What's not to love?

I keep seeing these comments about being committed to a rookie QB for 3 years.

What QB do think is going to play for KC that won't get a 3 year window? Do you think we're going to trade for Foles and not give him 3 years? Or is it just that this mystery non first round answer at QB is more of a sure thing?

Is it so that we can say "yes, we have no QB but at least we have a good LT"? We just had a season with a good LT and a bad QB, and it got us the worst season in franchise history.

None of the arguments against drafting a QB come with an explanation of how we will solve the QB situation.

What we're trying to tell you is :

#1) We all know that KC will not field the same QB next year (Cassel / Quinn)
#2) Reid and Dorsey will evaluate the QB talent available in the Draft, which Dorsey has ALREADY made the comment "there is NO 1st round grade QB talent in this draft"
#3) There are OTHER OPTIONS to acquire a QB.
#4) WArmack is in many peoples opinion the BEST player in the draft.
#5) Dorsey has stated HIS PHILOSOPHY is to draft the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.

IMO, it would be unjustified to draft a guard at #1 even though Warmack is the BEST PLAYER IN THIS DRAFT. Logic stands to find a trade partner that has a hardon for Geno and trade down and acquire Warmack at 5-10 thus recieving additional draft picks and select one of the top 5 QBs' in the 2nd round that will still be there. After all WE DO NEED A GUARD and since one is available that will secure the position for the next 10-15 years we should get him. That helps our line and still gives us our QB from the draft .

What logic? Nobody is trading up to #1 for Geno. If he isn't worth a #1 overall pick, he isn't worth a #1 overall pick. Jacksonville is going to take a DE. We have no leverage and NOBODY wants our pick.
