Restaurants of yesteryear

What Restaurants did you grow up around? I'm not talking super fancy and yes fast-food counts. What distinctive memories do you associate with them?

Mine?

Taco Via-(the lit up menu of the various taco plates displayed on the wall), WhiteCastle-On a paper plate with fries and Pepsi, Arthur Treachers(off Noland), Tippins(off Noland), Perkins(the free toy well), Country Deli(awesome local deli to Blue Springs heated sandwiches on Sourdough buns), Zarda BBQ and Dairy, FunHouse Pizza(of Course)(Dark. Video- Games,Electonic Riding Bull and 25-cent Taco night) Annes Sante Fe.

Keep in mind I never see these anymore living in Georgia.

J. Huston Tavern

Formerly a popular rest stop along the Santa Fe Trail, this restaurant was established in 1834 by an early settler of Arrow Rock, MO. It originally was a mercantile store where western travelers could stop in to rest and eat.

Now it's known for its legendary fried chicken.

DiGiacinto's in Springfield has been closed since covid and then never opened back up. They're done. Sam the owner I consider a friend. New Jersey Italian is what I would call it but the one thing I don't find anywhere else is Manhattan Clam Chowder. They had really yummy Manhattan Clam. I also loved their Linguini with Meat Sauce Diablo. Man, I miss that stuff. And then I miss listening to the music. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and others. The Ambiance was very special. Makes me want a glass of Cab.

The Central branch of the KC Library has an interesting event coming up "Iconic Restaurants of Kansas City" on May 22nd.

https://kclibrary.org/signature-even...ts-kansas-city
Quote:
Sitting at the nation’s crossroads, Kansas City has satisfied the appetites of hungry travelers since the days when it was a western outpost on the Santa Fe Trail. From perfectly grilled KC Strip steaks and barbecued burnt ends to steaming bowls of chili and fried chicken dinners, generations of families and restaurateurs have turned out delectable dishes that have become part of the city’s food heritage.

In a discussion of her new book Iconic Restaurants of Kansas City, food historian and local author Andrea Broomfield examines the histories of some of the city’s legendary eateries, such as El Nopal on the West Side, which introduced the wider populace to Mexican food in the 1930s. And downtown’s celebrated Savoy Grill, a long-time favorite of locals and dignitaries alike. Broomfield revisits boomtown boarding houses and luxury hotel dining rooms, lunch counters, cafeterias, and neighborhood cafes in exploring how restaurants of the past continue to shape what Kansas Citians crave today.

Broomfield is a professor and chair of the English Department at Johnson County Community College. She is the author of several articles and two other books pertaining to food history, Food and Cooking in Victorian England and Kansas City: A Food Biography.

V's is still on 40 Highway just east of Cool Crest.
Bamboo Hut building is still there, but it's been closed for a few years now. You can get a Bamboo Hut T-Shirt from Bygone Brands website.
47th and Sterling is where Royal Meadows Golf Course is. Rest of the area is residential. Maybe your streets are off? Steak & Ale at 47th and 40 Highway had good steak soup back in the day. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

So ****ing underrated when you get a place that does it right. I'm not a fan of New England clam chowder.

I grew up back in NJ and a buddy owned an Italian Deli and he did an incredible Manhattan Clam Chowder

Wasn't 'we're going to Steak and Ale' an actual commercial tagline way back in old-timey times?

Seems like I remember kids parroting it on the grade school playground, pretending to be excited about lunch. Maybe it was a tagline they made up on the spot, though.

I'm not a fried food or chicken tenders guy but I really like theirs. They are not overly spiced so that may be a negative.

The place down the street from Amazon is where I buy mine for lunch and they are always, hot, juicy and fresh. Also pretty big. Not overly breaded to ruin it.

Wow, that's a blast from the past for me. My very first Chiefs game, my old man took me to the big city (I'm from North Central KS) and we made a weekend of it. Went to Cool Crest the night before the game, and I thought it was some magical paradise. Very fond memories there.

I hear it's a shithole now?

Iliki Cafe was a Mediterranean place in the Picture Hills strip mall @ N. Cosby & NW 64th St, late 90s to 2010 or so? Owner lady was a real sweetheart, they had great kebabs, gyros, belgian trappist beers, and a garlic feta dip that was so damn good.

In that same strip mall, where the thrift store is now, was my favorite grocery store of all time: Bob's IGA. They had a killer little "arcade cove" next to the magazine rack with Ikari Warriors, Cabal and a couple other cabinets; was a nice little oasis during summer when my friends and I would take breaks from skateboarding all over that area.

There was a TCBY there too; sometimes get a craving for that grainy softserve froyo.

Across 64th st on the bluff overlooking I-29, next to the IHOP is a restaurant location that seems to change ownership every 3-4 years. Back in the 2000s it was for some time "Ya-Ya's Eurobistro", which - despite the atrocious name - had really good food and hot waitresses.

Just a few blocks south down Prarie View Dr at N Northwood DR (Hills of Walden neihborhood) was Stephensons which I remember having an awesome brunch buffet.
