****Official 2018 Missouri Tigers Football Thread****

The beginning of the 2018 season is a little under five weeks away. Missouri enters the year projected to finish 4th in the East, and may be a borderline Top 25 team according to some projection systems. After a disappointing recruiting cycle last year, pressure is on Odom to restock the cupboard after the senior years of Lock and Beckner, who will go down as two of the better Tigers in history and likely first round draft picks.

Schedule:

Spoiler!

Recruiting:

Spoiler!

At this point, the class is ranked 68-69 nationally by Rivals and 24/7. Odom is going to have to rely on Pinkel's diamond-in-the-rough approach. It looks like they've pulled back considerably from Georgia, focusing more upon Texas, which is what they should have always done. Unfortunately, they've done horrific in-state, and I think that will likely end up being the nail in Odom's coffin after the 2019 season.

12/19 Update: A strong finish late in the cycle moved the class up significantly. Securing commitments from grad transfer Kelly Bryant and TCU transfer Shawn Robinson has solidified the QB position in the short and intermediate term. A class that was ranked in the 60's at the beginning of the season is now a top 20-30 class factoring in transfers.

Hamas' Crystal Ball: 8-4; 4-4 in the SEC (wins vs. Ark, Tenn, Vandy, Kentucky)

On a related note, I think Mizzou fans are going to love Conner Bezelak (offers from BC, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, West Virginia, etc.), but they'll have to, likely, wait a year. Dude is top 15-20 pro style QB in the country.
Maybe a QB that was worth a shit would suffice? We're all clamoring in excitement for Clemsons sloppy seconds because our QB situation ****ing sucks.

Not sure on the specifics, but it likely puts him in the top 25 or so of ALL QBs, if that helps.

I don't think I'd take a Louisville threat seriously. Football is secondary at Louisville, what they can afford will be difficult since they have to pay out Petrino and they still have the whole Pitino mess.

The program is a total shit heap that he'd have to rebuild from nothing.

True, but Mizzou isn't paying Odom. At all. I'm not sure where he ranks in the SEC in terms of pay, but I'm guessing it's near the bottom.

Oh, he's down there. I don't think Louisville can afford to bump his pay enough to entice him into a dogshit situation.

His agent is angling for a raise that Odom will get.

But in all reality you can tell Odom's agent is trying for a pay raise. Louisville job, big article in the Post-Dispatch as well.

I could also see Odom looking to get out before the fire gets to hot.

I would say that if Odom jumps ship to Louisville, it'd be awfully telling what Jim Sterk thought about him.

Odom will get a raise (Norvell makes more at Memphis, lol) and more money for the asst pool.

Or Sterk wants his own hire.

BTW I'm not claiming to be an insider or have info or anything but I was talking to a buddy of mine that lives in STL last night about this...

He wines and dines with Mizzou big wigs, donors, etc. and basically told me Odom isn't the "Mizzou true son" all the local media love to make him out to be and would leave Mizzou in a heartbeat for the right offer....lateral or not.

I'm not saying he's leaving for Louisville or Colorado but I don't see it as 100% he'll stay just because Mizzou is his alma mater.

Scary thought. Sterk’s hiring record with football coaches isn’t good.

Granted, it was Washington State, but it still is sobering to look at who he has hired for football.

I also have been told Brady Hoke is on his list of potential replacements. Which is terrifying.

As he should at this point. He’s the lowest paid coach in the SEC and has the smallest assistant pool. That needs to be corrected.

If he leaves I will not mind one bit. Honestly, I would prefer to have a coach with a bit more charisma on the recruiting trail. Odom is boring and the a portion of the fanbase has wanted him fired at someone point each year he has been at Mizzou. I don't have faith he is the long term solution so if he bolts....well bye.

I want better recruiting, too. But he also has done a very nice job in finding underrated guys. Which is a key part of being successful at Missouri. You’re never going to consistently land top 15 classes somewhere like Mizzou, so it’s critical to be in the 20-35 range and pop some real contributors out of the 3-star and 2-star tiers.

Keys for success for a Missouri coach, IMO:

1) the point made above
2) get a good share of in-State kids you want (75 percent or better). Pinkel did this, Odom has not. Some of that is his staff. Some of that is the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Some of it is that St. Louis is a shithole with weird attitudes.
3) excel at player development

I think Odom is showing progress at 1 and 3. Enough that I’m willing to give him a few more years to get 2 rolling.

Success and stability help a lot with that, too.
