Freedoms not free by any means. We can't lay down and change our way of life because of rogue cowardly attacks but...
This shit wears on your psyche & really makes you question what your willing to expose yourself (& especially family) to no matter how innocuous on the surface. Sad day. Thoughts & prayers to all...

That's possible. I don't know what to believe at this point. Granted I haven't read this entire thread... but across the internet I haven't really seen too many people even suggest that the 20 year anniversary of Waco is this week. It was also Patriots Day, Tax Day, etc, etc. The OKC bombing was this week too, although that was a direct result of Waco. So who knows. That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I first saw this news though. It would certainly make sense if it was a domestic act by someone very angry at the government, although so far the "suspect" profiles being thrown about suggest otherwise.

I don't remember watching Challenger coverage until we got home from school and then it was just my brother, sister and me.
I do remember in the week that followed like 3 teachers said something like, "That could have been me on the shuttle, you know. I was in the running." I guess teachers were able to apply or something. |

"Adding further heartbreak to utter tragedy, the last mile of Monday's Boston Marathon, which was rocked by at least two explosions resulting in an unknown number of injuries and casualties Monday afternoon, was dedicated to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting massacre. Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio said before the race that had a "special significance" because it was 26.2 miles long and there was 26 victims in the Newtown attack. There was also a group of Newtown parents running as part of a group called Team Newtown Strong who were raising money for local charities. A banner honoring the victims, hung at the end of the 26th mile, can be seen in the photo above.
"In the first twenty miles we're honoring the twenty Sandy Hook first graders," Laura Nowacki, a spokesperson for Newtown Strong, explained to WBUR Boston. "When we crest Heartbreak Hill, and we're coming back towards Boston, we run the final six for our six fallen educators, including their lives, to protect our children." There was a 26-second moment of silence for the victims before the race started. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/natio...victims/64250/ |

I can definitely see how the runners didn't react to this. Several runners do the same thing I do when we run, which is listen to some music on full blast.
I do this because I hate hearing my breathing and it just keep me going. Running like that at the very end after 26 miles has got to be one hell of an adrenaline burst for anybody. So they probably didn't hear the blast and they barely noticed the bombing until 5 or 10 seconds after it happened. Really sad stuff though. In 2001 people started being scared of flying. In 2012 people started being scared of going to midnight premieres. Now people are going to be scared of doing about any damn thing in a major public event.

So I'd like to mention two things:
First, I've received several PMs and the like extending well wishes etc. and to those of you who did so, and everyone else keeping Boston in their thoughts and prayers, thank you very much. Second, yesterday I had a brief exchange on this thread regarding someone who was concerned their wife wouldn't like them run in the upcoming OKC marathon because of this and I thoughtlessly replied saying (in paraphrase) "hey, who would target the OKC marathon anyway?" That was a crappy, stupid, ignorant post by me, especially in light of the Timothy McVeigh bombing, and I apologize for it. I was called to the carpet on this (offline) by someone, and rightly so. My apologies in general to everyone here for being an idiot, and especially and in particular to anyone who knew anyone affected by that very, very sad event.

Just checking in -- Boston is basically operating as normal, except for heavier traffic due to rerouting around the crime scene (they warned us about this yesterday so hopefully people adjusted their commute), and they have shut down one train station, which isn't really all that bad because trains are still going through it, they're just not stopping there.
