Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

I wonder if they have to fly Malaysian for the free flight. That'd scare me to death.

Everything I've seen or heard about that area paints it as rough, cold seas (at least at this time of year), remote, and deep. The remains of that plane might as well be on the moon.

The loss of a generator should not have caused it to make an emergency landing. The A330 has two engine driven generators, one Auxiliary power unit generator and Ram air turbine (R.A.T) for emergency.
The minimum equipment list for this Acft allows dispatch with one generator inop as long as the A.P.U gen is operative and used for the duration of flight. I think this acft was dispatched with one generator inop
(A.P.U or engine) and one more failed during flight, still no cause for panic.

I don't understand much of what you're saying, but I'm sure this was true...a few weeks ago.

They would have an easier time finding it if it was on the moon. That's why the ocean really creeps me out. Who knows what the hell is down there.

A Malaysia Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Hong Kong Monday after a generator failed, a little more than two weeks after one of the carrier's other jets vanished from radar screens and lost contact with civilian air traffic controllers.

A statement on Malaysia Airlines' official Facebook page said that Flight MH066 was bound for Seoul, South Korea from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when the main generator supplying normal electrical power to the aircraft failed. However, the airline said that the plane's auxiliary power unit was able to supply the aircraft.

Officials at Hong Kong's airport told the Associated Press firefighters were put on standby for the arrival of the Airbus A330-300, which landed without incident just before 3 a.m. on Monday.

I know we never made emergency landings because of the loss of one generator and like I said, dispatch is allowed with one generator inop.
Something lost in the translation?

The area it went down is so deep that the pings from the black box will be difficult to detect by sonar unless the ship is almost right on top of it.

Unless they get lucky in the next week or two, I don't think they'll find the plane for many years.

It wasn't anywhere close to Perth. There is almost no reason whatsoever for any humans to go to or travel through that area of the ocean.

The only reason people are mentioning Perth or Australia at all is because the closest land mass to this incredibly remote stretch of ocean is western Australia, but its still thousands of kilometers and a 6 hour flight away. Radar would not come anywhere close to seeing it.

Although that possibility has not been ruled out, plain old-fashioned boring "crazy" is more likely, and would not require this incredible series of coincidences and a fire that was just barely enough, but not too much to bring down the plane.

You're kidding us, right? With having useless no-smoking light bulbs and loose fire extinguished brackets as "maintenance" reasons to not take off, I'm pretty sure a broken ****ing generator is a national ****ing crisis to airline lawyers!

I once was delayed by an hour because 1 of 2 shitters was down and this was for a 40 minute flight from St Louis to KC.

I think that we could have made it with just one. It was also the last flight for that plane that day. It's possible KC was lacking an experienced shitter mechanic.
