Dish Network announces Virtual Cable
Sounds promising and will be interesting to see if other companies follow suit.

Still trying to figure out how Dish gets away with advertising "the same sports" as DTV.

They need to figure out how to do it with the base package as well. Even when watching WatchESPN, it cuts off the other feed a few seconds later. They need to have a dual watch option for $5 like every other company has.

Cancelled DirecTV today, so I'm now officially cable free.
Tablo is installed and running and works pretty well in case anyone's curious. I generally send it through Chromecast, and that interface is a little buggy, but it seems to work. They're previewing a new Roku app that works pretty much like any other guide-based tuner out there. It seems to buffer a lot when starting a live stream, but once it gets going, quality is great. For $5/month for a DVR with ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, and PBS (and a ton of other shit channels I don't care about), I won't complain. SlingTV's interface leaves something to be desired, but it's functional. You can't really fast forward anything (even on-demand stuff), which is a pain. If they can get it more oriented toward on demand rather than watching live, it'll be great. Until then, I don't get much out of channels that I literally have to watch live. But at least I can watch Game of Thrones without having to pirate it. Regardless, I was paying roughly $140/month for DirecTV (including HBO), and that number is now more like $55 for Netflix, Hulu, Sling, HBO, and a guide subscription for Tablo. I'll take it. (And I was paying for Netflix and Hulu along with DirecTV anyway.) |

I went to the Channel Master OTA DVR. This thing works awesome for OTA recordings. The only drawback so far is it's only 2 tuners. So, record 1 watch one, or record 2 while watching a recorded show. The nicest feature is there is no subscription with this unit, like all of the others have. I've added Sling TV as well as Netflix. Already had Amazon Prime, just for the free shipping and shopping features, so I don't count it as an additional cost. My bill went from $125 to $29. Don't miss the hundreds of channels at all. |

I was disappointed with Sling. Such an unreliable feed. Always buffering and my internet is decent. I'm sure they'll figure it out, just pretty buggy at this point. I just had it for the 1 month free trial anyways, though.

I haven't had buffering issues, but the interface is ssllllllooooooowwwwww on Roku. They need to implement some sort of "what's on at a glance" system because it currently takes like 5 minutes to flip through all of the different channels.

Ha - I wish. No, I pay about that for internet alone. If I'm adding up my full "before" and "after" for everything involved in my setup, it would look something like:
Code:
Before: DirecTV $120 Internet $55 Hulu $8 Netflix $8 $191 After: Internet $65 Hulu $8 Netflix $8 Tablo $5 SlingTV $20 $106 Last edited by DaFace; 04-15-2015 at 10:31 AM.. |

For the record, it is WAY better on the new Roku 2 (and all all Roku 3's). Night and day difference from my old Roku 2 XS.
