Justin Houston will get a long term deal done!

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole has said the Chiefs have confirmed getting a long term deal done with Justin Houston despite initial hesitation

He said he will get north of what Robert Quinn makes and south of what JJ Watt makes.

Also said Chiefs didn't like his leadership and had poor work ethic but since the start of the season it has done a complete 180. Said the Chiefs see this as good use of money to invest in this type of player

I figured its almost a definite that a contract won't be done until next year.

Why? Players who have been tagged sign long term deals all the time over the summer before the season. Even if a deal doesn't get done, I would highly doubt he would risk losing $750,000 per game he misses.

Seahawks yes. Patriots not for the most part. Their big money FAs have been cut, traded or let them walk. Deion Branch and Lawyer Milloy come to mind. But with the caliber of Houston, I don't think they'd let him go but they're not afraid to.

If it's not done before July 15th, he'll be Franchised.

According to all reports, he does not want to be Franchised and I'm certain the Chiefs don't want to pay him $13 million this year against the cap.

Yes, I think a long term deal will get done before July 15th. It benefits all sides, Houston included.

I think they the Chiefs want Houston on the tag this year. Another year of max effort from Houston. Major protection from serious injury. If his numbers fall then it might lower his contract leverage. I don't see his numbers going up.

He's already been franchised.

If he doesn't sign long term before the 15th, then negotiations will no longer be allowed ntil the next free agency period next year.

From a tax perspective, it makes sense for Houston to sign a long term deal with a signing bonus spread out over several years and a low base salary, as opposed to $13 million in salary this year, $16 million next year, etc. and so on.

Houston is going to get paid. I sincerely doubt it'll be by another team that's willing to give him $100 million plus two first round draft choices, so it'll be the Chiefs who will be paying him. IMO, it's just a matter of structure, which is most likely holding up the deal between the two sides.
