Well, this doesn't make much sense.

Staying at 1.1 and drafting a tackle makes sense if we traded Albert.

Trading down from 1.1 and drafting BPA on value makes sense if we still have Albert.

Trading Albert away for a 2nd rounder makes sense if we had to give up our second this year for Alex Smith.

Trading a 2nd for Alex Smith makes sense if we didn't think we could land any good QBs with our 2nd rounder.

But none of these are the case. We still have Albert, we stayed at 1.1, we took a tackle, Geno Smith and Matt Barkley are still on the board, and we don't have a single second round pick.

Oh no, I've gone cross-eyed.

There are several strategies that would have made sense here, but the Chiefs have seemed to have skillfully navigated around all of them.

I... just don't get it.

I've said many times that the Chiefs weren't forced to take either Alex or Geno Smith. They could have just as easily signed Kolb, Jason Campbell, or some other FA QB as a one year stopgap, rolling over the decision for next year.

Your plan assumes that this is the only year to improve the football team, and there isn't.

They could have punted on the QB issue. They didn't for one of two reasons. Either A) they think Alex Smith can actually win a SB for them or B) it was a business decision to get to mediocrity and fill the seats.

A) paints them as incompetent
B) paints the owner as a stooge who wants 8-8 and a full stadium more than a competing roster.

I see nothing engraved in stone that says 2013 is the only year the Chiefs will ever be able to select a QB.

The Chiefs chose Alex Smith and gave up the compensation they did because they think he is a legitimate answer.

And that should terrify you.
First, I don't think Campbell is better than Alex Smith, or that he fits a Reid style offense at all as I don't think he's particularly accurate. I think the fact that they weren't into Kolb says more about what Reid thinks of Kolb.

As for this being the only year to select a QB-I don't see signing A.Smith as anything other than selecting the best option they had available. He literally is the best QB available to them at this time. I don't think that precludes upgrading next year, or even taking a project in rounds 2-whatever this year.

And I think that what Reid sees in Smith is that he's a smart, tough guy that's accurate. I think he feels he can get more out of him than others have and Reid's history says he might be right.

At any rate, Reid's history also says that if it isn't working, he'll dump Smith in a heartbeat. That history also hints that Reid will probably want a project to groom, so I'm betting on a Nassib/Dysert type pretty soon.

Hey Guys and Gals

Dolphins fan here just to give another perspective on this whole Branden Albert trade.

I think the Dolphins covet Albert but I doubt they ever offered a 2nd round pick in 2013. I think they view him as a good but not great tackle. As well, his back issues complicate things. Knowing Ireland, he probably offered the latter of the 3rds and may be willing to move the earlier of the 3rds. Say what you will about Ireland (most Fins fans think he's an ass) but he is a stubborn and hard-nosed negotiator. As well, I doubt they are willing to pay Albert Duane Brown money.

The Fins likely believe they have leverage as you guys just took a LT and Albert has been vocal about his displeasure with the prospect of playing RT. Not to mention the 9.8M hit for a disgruntled player.

Time is of the essence as no team will trade for Albert w/o a physical and it seems Miami is the only team that can accomplish this in short order.

There's belief the Dolphins fallback options are someone like Menelik Watson or Winston/Clabo after the draft.

We should know soon enough.

I don't expect Chiefs to get what they want (and they didn't get the top second) but I expect them to keep trying to move Albert so they don't have him as a distraction this year. I think Dorsey drop the ball in negotiations with Ireland.

Just FYI, I hate Garo Yepremian, and Dave Szott was not holding.

I think the issue was in franchising him. They should have had the foresight to know (at least at the time) that Joeckel was a possible top pick. Once Albert signed the tender the game changed. I don't know about you guys but I think playing a game of chicken with 9.8M at stake and only net a 2nd or 3rd could make things dicey with the owner.

All of the quality tackles have gone off the board for the most part, if someone is still needing a LT.. like Mia, Ariz... etc... we have more leverage now than we did before the draft. I'm still not convinced that they want to trade BA unless its an offer they can't refuse.

That makes two of us. Esspecially the Szott holding call when he was falling down backwards.

Oddly enough I think Zona is content going into the season with Brown and Massie as their tackles. There big disaster was up the middle and they just went a long way to shoring that up.
As for the Dolphins, they believe Martin is a more natural LT. He had a few high profile blow ups (Aldon Smith) but didn't look out of place at LT. If all else fails, I think they have at least lukewarm interest in Winston.

Effortless offseason.

@RapSheet: The #Dolphins and the #Chiefs are on the clock. Branden Albert needs to take a physical. Time is running out. Lot of doubts now
