'Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi Film in the Works (Exclusive)

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks for the film, which would center on the Jedi master who has been played by both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor.
Stephen Daldry is Star Wars’ newest hope.

The Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours is in early talks to direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal makes, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass. It's not known at this stage if Ewan McGregor will reprise his role. The Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone is one of several projects being developed by Lucasfilm and Disney that fall outside the trilogies telling the saga of the Skywalker family. A Han Solo movie is now in the final stages of shooting under new director Ron Howard and Lucasfilm is also looking at movies featuring Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett, among others.

In the original Star Wars trilogy, Kenobi was at first a desert-dwelling and war-weary hermit who later proved to be a wise and powerful warrior, brandishing a light saber. He was briefly a mentor to a young Luke before being cut down by Darth Vader, his former pupil. Alec Guinness played Kenobi, garnering him an Oscar nomination to boot. The character got star treatment in the George Lucas-directed prequels which told the origin of Vader and his betrayal of Kenobi and the Jedis. McGregor has said he would be open to playing the character again. Sources stress, however, that since there is no script, no actor is attached.

“Rogue One” was the first of the standalones, and Disney is currently shooting an untitled origin tale of beloved smuggler Han Solo. Some of the other standalones in development include a Jabba the Hutt story and a Boba Fett movie.

Daldry hails from the theater world and made his feature debut with Billy Elliot, which netted him his first directing Oscar nomination. He followed that up with searing dramas The Hours and The Reader, which also netted him directing nominations.

He most recently directed episodes of Netflix’s period drama The Crown, which put him into play in this Emmy season.

He is repped by CAA.

If the title of the movie includes Star Wars, you can damn well bet people are going to line up.

It took the animated Clone Wars series years to build an audience. Star Wars Rebels took a few years to build an audience and had to move to more adult themes to do so.

Contrary to popular belief, movie studios can't just put a name on a movie and expect to earn $500 million or more at the box office.

Because it would be a movie, not an animated TV series, and it would get a ****ing marketing budget to go along with that. Rebels had to move to more adult themes, you say. Maybe people think cartoons are for kids and that's why it took a while to catch on in animated format.

A ****ing Star Wars movie is going to sell tickets. Rogue One actually did have new characters, though it didn't stray very far from the established plot. It seemed to do okay with new characters.

I don't give enough of a **** to continue to argue, but Jesus Christ on a twat rocket, we have already seen enough Obi-Wan. Which part of his life is left to cover? The part where he hid in a cave a few miles from Luke for 20 years and changed his name to Old Ben?

I came into the thread and expressed my opinion that I would rather see an original story than more of the same people. I don't dislike Obi-Wan, but we know his story. Beyond that, my participation in this thread has been either a direct response to questions, or a direct response to someone trying to talk down to me like he is some infallible industry know-it-all.

No, I don't consider Rogue One original because the "star" of Rogue One was the Death Star itself.

Since 1977, we've known that the Death Star plans were stolen and given to Princess Leia. What we didn't know was who and how those plans were stolen.

Tarkin, even more so than Vader, was featured in the film, as was Bail Organa, Mon Mothma and Saw Guerrera, all characters that were featured in past films and/or animated series, which are canon.

The part about "Universe Building" is that Lucasfilm is doing it correctly by introducing new characters in the galaxy along with beloved characters such as Chewie, Han, Luke, Leia and now Lando.

In addition, we've been introduced to Finn, Rey, Poe, Phasma, Hux, Kyo Ren and maybe even more importantly, Maz Kanata, who's not only appearing in Episode VII & VIII but the Han Solo film as well.

They're expanding the universe while keeping beloved characters central to the story.

Anything before the sale to Disney is no longer canon. So every game, novel or comic produced before 2012 no longer exists in the Star Wars galaxy.
