If you keep Smith on the roster till June, you can't cut him.

His full salary is guaranteed for the next 2 years if he's here past March 12. At that point, it's pretty much impossible to walk away before 2017 unless you find a trade partner (not impossible). And I gotta believe the NFL won't approve the trade if you put Smith w/ a post June 1 tag and just carry a salary figure about $15 million over the cap for 2 months, otherwise why would they have that rule in place at all?

I'm the biggest Smith fan here, but if Brees can be had without breaking the team, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds to make the call. We're talking about arguably the best or 2nd best QB in the NFL today.

Buh Bye Smith.


As a side note, you guys could trade up on us immigrants with a new batch of Aints fans. They're used to being losers pre-Brees.

But they wouldn't actually free up the remaining $11 million that shifts into next season until June 1 even with that designation. I really can't imagine the NFL would be okay with the Chiefs staying that high over the cap.

Oh...and it would absolutely murder our cap for 2016, especially with the dead money already due Bowe and Hali.

I just don't see this one as remotely possible.

Designating Smith as a June 1st cut would push 7m to 2016, though.

OverTheCap has $3.6M getting pushed to 2016 and saving $12M this year, not the $8M you said earlier.
