WalterFootball mocks 2016

Because it's never too early...

Oct. 10

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State

The Alex Smith experiment has to end now. Smith's struggles haven't all been his fault, but it's clear by now that he's not the answer. He is a weak-armed quarterback who never takes chances downfield. Kansas City needs to move on from him.

I keep bouncing back and forth between Connor Cook and and Jared Goff as the No. 1 quarterback. Goff just had a poor showing, so I'll move Cook into the top spot, though it's 50-50 right now. Cook has some accuracy and consistency issues that NFL teams are legitimately worried about.

Like the Jaguars, Kansas City could be moving on from its 2013 first-round choice. Eric Fisher not only has been terrible; he's been a wuss as well, failing to play through simple injuries.

66. Kansas City Chiefs: Landon Turner, G, North Carolina

Back-to-back offensive linemen for a head coach who loves bolstering the trenches? Makes sense to me. The Chiefs, as mentioned earlier, need major upgrades up front.

Whoa! There aren't many mock drafts that have this happening, and probably for good reason. It's still a possibility, however, if history is any sort of indication.

Alex Smith is 31. That's not old for a quarterback by any means, but Donovan McNabb was 31 as well when Andy Reid spent the 36th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft on Kevin Kolb. And according to my nifty Windows 10 calculator, that's just eight selections later than this one. Could history repeat itself, especially if Reid likes Lynch and is shocked to see him fall like this? Absolutely! I'm not saying it will happen, but it definitely could. It helps that the Chiefs have met with Lynch on multiple occasions.

59. Kansas City Chiefs: Cody Whitehair, G/OT, Kansas State

The Chiefs lost their best blocker this offseason when Jeff Allen departed via free agency. It wouldn't be a surprise if Kansas City selected a guard early on as a result.

126. Kansas City Chiefs: Kentrell Brothers, ILB, Missouri

Derrick Johnson's return to the lineup has been huge for Kansas City's defense, but the team has a weakness right next to Johnson. Also, it needs to be considered that Johnson just turned 33, so he doesn't have many dominant years left.

162. Kansas City Chiefs: Rashard Higgins, WR, Colorado State

The Chiefs need a capable receiver besides Jeremy Maclin. When Maclin left the game against the Chargers, the offense looked pretty lost for a while.

Pick change; previously De'Vondre Campbell, LB

165. Kansas City Chiefs: Anthony Zettel, DE/DT, Penn State

Mike DeVito announced his retirement recently, so the Chiefs will have to find a defensive lineman at some point.
I'd actually kinda like this draft. I don't see the top guard being available at 59 though. Can't believe I said I kind of like something Walter did...

Whitehair and Brothers will both be long gone before those picks.

I agree that Whitehair will likely be gone before #59 but I'm not so sure about Brothers. He's not a dynamic ILB, more of a two down Thumper.

I don't like him for the Chiefs, at all and can't see them taking a ILBer unless something ridiculous happens in the first round and there's insane value. They took Alexander and Wilson last year along with adding March in UDFA.

They need to figure out what they've got in those guys before adding another draft pick, IOM.

Probably a reaction from all the e-mails he gets from Chiefs fans telling him to take his four or five annual offensive linemen picks per draft for us and blow it out his dickhole. I think of Walter as the ultimate "throw a dart at a wall" guy.

Brothers is solid if not spectacular. I imagine someone might reach a little in the third for him. If he found his way on to the Chiefs I wouldn't be pissed, but I do agree I want to see exactly what we have in Alexander and Wilson before we go drafting there again. Particularly Wilson.

Can you blame them? I'm pretty sure it's a running joke among sportswriters to pick a fatty for KC every year.

As sure as the sun shall rise in the east, each spring shall find a new fatty mocked in round 1 at Bleacher Report. You can literally set Holy Days by it.

Trading one of those picks to improve the roster is a no brainer.
If we are talking about replacing our 3rd rounder this year. I think it would take more than a 3rd and a 5th next year to acquire that pick. I don't want to give up our 2cd next year. I am afraid that is what it would take, as I recall the value of a 3rd this year is a 2cd the next year.

i think with all the extra picks between titans and cleveland, there is a very good chance we'll get a trade offer...

Broncos, Browns Have Interest in Trading Up from 31, 32
Updated April 23, 2016
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

All of the attention regarding the Cleveland Browns has been on whether they would take a quarterback with the eighth-overall pick, or if they'd select someone like Ronnie Stanley or Ezekiel Elliott instead. However, in speaking to sources, the Browns and Denver Broncos have been speaking to teams to feel out potential deals to trade up from their picks at 31 (Denver) and 32 (Cleveland). One team that both teams have had discussions with is the Green Bay Packers, who have the 27th-overall selection.

An intriguing bonus for the Browns moving back into the opening round from the initial selection of the second frame is the fifth-year option that comes with rookie contracts of first-round picks. It isn't expensive to move up just a few spots, and that extra season of a cheap rookie contract with a player in their prime years is very valuable, especially if the player is a quarterback. If the Browns pass on a quarterback with the No. 8 selection, don't be surprised if they look to move up from pick 32 to land a young signal caller to compete with Robert Griffin III.

Denver also is in the quarterback market. In speaking to league contacts, they believe the Broncos would draft Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch if he got to them, but many around the league don't think that Lynch will reach the Broncos. Trading up with Green Bay would allow Denver to leap division rival Kansas City (28th pick), who also could consider Lynch.

If the Broncos and Browns trade up, it almost certainly won't happen in advance of the draft like the Rams-Titans and Eagles-Browns trades. These conversations are done now in part to get prepared for making a deal when the teams are on the clock and the targeted player is available.

With a number of other teams being in the quarterback market, including the Jets, Bills, Cowboys, and 49ers, there could be a lot of interest in trades in the middle portion and late in the first round. Teams like the Packers that already have their starting quarterback could be offered some interesting packages to move down.

I'm not surprised that Denver has talked to the team that drafts before us.

I'm sure everyone has had preliminary discussions with other teams regarding trade situations.

Dorsey sounds like he really likes Lynch, to me.
