2019 Free agency Thread

We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

Unless Veach actually was interested in Flowers but there never were any rumors.

I keep thinking PP makes too much sense. I'm not sure he's worth that much but I'd possibly be willing to give up to two 2nd round picks.

With him, you have a strong secondary, and you have him for two years on a reasonable deal before you let him go and recoup some of those picks with a 3rd round compensatory pick.

You get PP, you draft your top passrusher with the 1st round pick and you add a few defensive players (LB and CB) with your other draft picks or FAs and this looks like a real nice defense.
Upside.

You put Flowers in this system and he's roughly the same guy he's always been. He'll be a damn good, solid player who does his job and helps other guys do theirs.

Clowney, OTOH, has been a piece the Texans have often used to free up Watt. He's always been used as the complementary element to the Texans defense. Meanwhile if you brought him here, he could be the guy you build the defense around and use other guys to free him up to create havoc.

And he would do precisely that. He's a monster. Physically he's a far superior talent to Flowers and he's been a hell of a battler even in a complementary role in Houston.

Flowers is a solid run defender and complementary pass-rusher who'd be good for 7-8 sacks and 16 damn solid games. He's a rich mans Okafor in that regard. Clowney, OTOH, could be a 15+ sack/game guy while being equally good in run-support. He's a poor mans Mack. He just has the ability to do much more than Flowers does, IMO.

Cowboys are apparently close to acquiring Robert Quinn from Miami. Plot thickens with Demarcus Lawrence?

Bleacher report app says Miami "Has the parameters in place" to send pass rusher to Dallas. Not sure if that means it's closer to be completed.

5th rounders are lotto tickets.

If you can get a special teamer out of it, that's a good pick.

Very few 5th rounders ever make it past the practice squad.

$2M for John Ross won't prevent you from signing the Scandricks of the world.

5th rounders don't mean shit.

They're glorified UDFAs with a success rate nominally better (and arguably not even that).

People think finding one Jared Allen makes them all Jared Allen. It's like the last 15 years when we didn't need to draft a qb early because anybody can find Tom Brady in the 6th. Those guys aren't what you find in those rounds. They're the exceptions that prove the rule. Day 3 picks are guys who might - might! - turn into an okay starter in 3 years. They're important picks to hit on because when they do work out they're the cheap starters that allow you to give big contracts to your stars. What they aren't is somebody who's going to help you win right now. You don't fill holes on the roster with them. Unless those holes are on special teams. Which ours are not.
