Pats Cheating Comfirmed

According to the report, the league sources say the NFL determined 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots were under-inflated by two pounds per square inch each. Per NFL rules, footballs are required to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

It would take more than a 100 degree temperature change to cause the kind of pressure drop that the balls experienced. And that's assuming the officials measured the pressure immediately after the balls were inflated, and somehow didn't notice they were holding footballs that were hot. The suggestion that this was anything other than intentional is ludicrous.

So if I warm a football to 80* in my oven. Then set it outside for a couple hours. Nothing will change?

Not true at all. Let's say they inflated them at 80 degrees then it dropped to 45 degrees outside.. AND it was wet so the transfer of heat will go faster AND the pressure dropped outside as well (I don't have that figure so I'll ignore that aspect and pretend it is 14.7 and didn't change)

80F = 299.8K
45F = 280.4K

Ok so you have 12.5 as what the inflated to... but this is a relative reading so we need to add 14.7 to get a pressure of 27.2.

Now lets look at the formula, PV=nRT We can assume that V, n and R don't change (or not enough to matter in this case). So that means we have P1V=nRT1 and P2V=nRT2
27.2*V =nR*299.8 and P2*V =nR*280.4
Use V to match it all up..
(nR*299.8)/27.2=(nr*280.4)/P2
1/P2=299.8/(27.2*280.4)
P2=27.2*280.4/299.8=25.44
25.44-14.7=10.74
12.5-10.74 =1.76 PSI drop

SWEET! I pulled those numbers for temps out of my ass and it came out pretty close!

So, it's more than reasonable to explain it this way.

Welp, Austin chief just solved it! The Colts footballs were somehow immune to this, though! I'd hate to see -25° weather...those balls would be flat!

Also, you're ignoring the fact that all measurements were taken in the same location: the officials' locker room. There is no way that the temperature difference could have accounted for the change in pressure.
Check my maths. I'm pretty sure they are correct.

And the temperature of the air in the ball takes TIME to change. We have to assume that the temperature of a ball sitting in a hot room then taken to another warm room will stay hot... but a ball that has been outside in 45F temps and wet (increased temp transfer) for over an hour would be cold even if taken into a warm room for a minute.

Or the Colts inflated theirs higher to begin with and the drop fell within the range. or their balls were inflated in a colder environment and checked against that. or any NUMBER of factors we DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT.

Or, realistically, the Patriots cheated.

Ok switching it up to 85F

85F = 302.6K

P2=27.2*280.4/302.6=25.2
25.2-14.7=10.5
12.5-10.5 =2 PSI drop EXACTLY!

BAMN! (drops the thermometer and walks away)

So, filling the balls up in a controlled 85° climate and storing them there knowing they'd deflate with the weather change isn't cheating. Ah. Got it. And spygate didn't give the Pats an edge, either.

Classy organization, no doubt! Not scumbags at all.

And clearly, if that's what happened, it was planned by the Patriots ... and they just had two press conferences totally denying any knowledge of how this may have happened

It's all stupid and probably has nothing to do with the outcome of games. I hope it goes away and is forgotten by the SB.

But if the balls were deflated it is because Brady prefers them that way, I cannot see a logical way around that fact
