Joe Buck?

Firstly: I don't watch enough baseball to really have an opinion one way or the other.

That being said, I know people on here can't stand Joe Buck. I've been reading the hate for a while and people complaining about him commentating the series.

I woke up to local sports radio, and those guys were ALSO bashing Joe Buck. Then every caller that called in was bashing Joe Buck and saying how the technical difficulty time was so wonderful because Joe Buck wasn't on the air.

So, my question: is this a pretty universal feeling outside of Cardinals land? Has Joe Buck jumped the shark? Will the network continue to give him major gigs if there's this much dislike of the guy's commentating?

His job is to bring drama into the game, to fill down time and to make things more exciting.

He's annoying as hell doing it, and he's going to need to call his doctor for his big market team erection that lasts more than 4hrs.

He was on Le Batard this morning talking about not discussing Volquez' father. He said all he knew was the Rpyals PR guy said the wife didn't want him to know and there is no way he's going to be the guy that tells a man his dad died via television. He earned some respect with that.

I'm with Milkman. I enjoy Collinsworth, but I realize I am in the minority. People give me the weirdest looks when I tell them I like him.

I'll tell you who I hate.....****ing Solomon Wilcots. I find him terribly annoying.

VARSITY
I listened to Ryan and Denny last night and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a lot calmer, and since it was an epic, historic game, it was great to hear Denny's call. I have a feeling if the Royals win it all, he may hang it up after this year.

I think the Joe Buck situation is an accumulation

He's a nepotism hire
He's a shadow of his father
He has a hateable face
He and Aikman in the booth together look like the centerfold for 'Blue Boy' magazine
He screams 'sure I went to boarding school, but I can hang at your frat party'
He goes prudish in high profile settings [Moss' 'absolutely disgusting' TD celebration].
His praise is easy to tune out and his criticism is like nails on a chalkboard.

None of them in themselves make him the worst announcer on earth. But each one gives the viewer a unique and legitimate hook to hang their hate on, and it festers and festers, then comedians make fun of him, then Artie Lange destroys his HBO show, and before you know it he's a pariah.

I actually don't have a major problem with Joe Buck. I do have an issue with a lot of sports commentators so I do get why people don't like him and how it affects them. Harrold Reynolds has been getting on my nerves lately with his over-analysis and trying to find stuff that isn't there. Everyone else on MLB network I love.

Here's how Joe Buck announces an at-bat:

"
Ball one
The 1-0 pitch
Ball two
Here's the 2-0
(foul ball) A tremendous swing by Daniel Murphy. Wow. What a swing. He reeeeally got a hold of that one. Just an incredible swing. (notice he doesn't mention at any point that the ball was foul)
The 2-1
Strike two
The 2-2
And here's a groundout...Oh wait...He's safe.
"

In summary, here are my main complaints about Joe Buck:
1) He states the current count before every pitch, but offers no other commentary or description of the pitches during the at-bat.
2) He goes absolutely nuts about foul balls. All the time. Like, pretty much every inning he talks about how great a swing was on a foul ball. But he rarely says that the ball was foul. If I was just listening and not watching, I would think people were hitting doubles or home runs based on his praise of the swing.
3) He assumes outs. He calls "ground outs" and "fly outs" etc. and says "to end the inning" well before the play is over. I've heard him do this on multiple occasions.
