Think about construction. All of a sudden new homes and buildings are built on the metric system... well all of the existing structures still have to be maintained/renovated which would still require standard system materials so now suppliers have to stock both types. Too much confusion for too little gain. The old system will never completely go away so what's the point in changing now?

So, first, if the whole rest of the world could successful switch from whatever system they were on to metric, what is so special about us that we're too dumb to be able to pull it off?

Maybe it takes 4 generations for the construction industry, but if you just force the switch, and give it time, then we're onto the new system. As it stands, we just prolong the pain.

Yeah, the practicality is we're too big a nation with too much reliance on the English system ingrained in too robust a system to change everything over completely.

Computers and mobile apps have conversions at your fingertips if you choose to operate in SI.

Canada is fully metric and still uses dimensional lumber. A 2x4 is 38 x 89 mm.

if it's the same thing with metric dimensions then what's the point of changing? How is that going to simplify anything? Simplicity is the point of the metric system, right?

Its not like these industries are banned from doing business in metric.

Anyway, you can imagine the outcry from the nutjobs at the president and any politician in favor of an official switch. We'd hear every theory about how the US is joining a new world order, how it's the first step in giving away our sovereignty to the UN, how we want to be more like socialist Europe, etc.
