Competition Committee to true NFL Fans: Get ****ed

From ProFootballTalk:

Quote:
Illegal contact penalties are way up this preseason, the result of the league office telling officials to monitor defensive backs closely and throw flags with impunity. That will continue in the regular season.

“We’re not going to change how we’re calling the games once the regular-season starts,’’ NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino told The MMQB.

Then throw in how the NFL has changed, all the damn commercials, all the stoppages of play and it has just become not a fun product to watch.
excellent post. 2 minutes of football, penalty, 3 minutes of commercials, 3 minutes of football, bad call, 10 minutes of reviews and commercials, field goal, 3 minutes of commercials, 1 minute football, penalty, 30 seconds of football, penalty, commercial break, 3 minutes of football, bad call, 10 minute review and commercials. ect.

And you can always tell who will win the game long before it is settled on the field by the way the announcers are reading their script and the way the refs are dog piling on one team and letting the team with the star QB grab all the limelight-as Cam did the last game. 20 straight shots on Cam along with hours of praise.

NFL is only one step above WWE now days. Scripted announcers, bad refs and predetermined event with lots of commercials.

$ is the reason, but the lawsuit settlement was a drop in a bucket.

The $ comes from increasing viewership - domestic and foreign. I would argue that what made the NFL successful was that it was more of a "team" sport rather than individual talent like basketball. To appeal to a wider audience the NFL has clearly abandoned that approach and adopted a TMZ/reality tv approach (and FF ). They are going to identify a "star" and force feed him down everybody's throat whether you like him or not. Tebow used up his 15 minutes of fame, so now it is Johnny Football. Tebow was Paris Hilton and Johnny Manziel is Kim Kardashian. Totally unproven, but they are going to have their broadcasters follow his every move and overanalyze every scramble, underthrow, middle finger, etc. I guarantee that NFL coverage outside of the US is the same. Manziel is getting mentioned, but people never heard of Bortles or Bridgewater (two guys who can complete more than 50% of their passes). Winston should go and steal a few more Alaskan crab legs because clearly the NFL loves spectacles.

I think it's more than just FF.

Fantasy Football is a symptom, rather than a cause.

Our society continues to lift up the individual, especially celebrities.

Football is becoming more and more about star players, not good teams.

These rule changes favor certain, high profile positions. It's not just to protect Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, it's also to create an environment that fosters the development of the NEXT Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

Fantasy football MAY be at the root of the rules changes, but it is totally misguided. Why? Becasue as it has been pointed out in an earlier post, each league can adjust their scoring as they see fit. They can award 1 pt for every 5, 10, 20 50 yards receiving if they wish and everything else. Nothing is set in stone. So while the league MAY have done this due to FF, there was no reason to...

For my view, why make the game slower and introduce even MORE judgement calls to the game? Was being the best spectator sport in the world not good enough? A little contact down the field is not the end of the world and it certainly isn't career threatening like hits to the helmet or clipping are.

Ironically, basketball has swung back towards team ball due to unselfish stars like Duncan and LeBron. Meanwhile, the NFL obsesses over a small minority of quarterbacks to the detriment of the game as a whole.

This is what I posted on FB in response to my linking of the article in the OP with "Fantasy football has practically killed the NFL"

Quote:
The NFL's objective of $20 billion in revenue can only come by getting a bigger market share than what they currently have. What they currently have are pretty much diehards who have been generational fans of their teams a la most college football fanbases and have been around football their entire lives as players or friends/family of players at some level.

What's left are people who don't really care any particular team because they've moved, aren't close to a franchise already or just didn't grow up watching any level of the sport be it high school, college or professional.

And that's the catch: if you're not a "diehard" football fan that's been exposed to its several decades of history then you're not going to appreciate the intricacies of the game or its history as a rough activity that is 100% a team game that is won or lost on the line of scrimmage. A casual fan just has a broad view of the sport: team who scores the most points wins, and you get more points in touchdowns than through field goals. Scoring is exciting and offenses score the most points. It's also what keeps casual TV viewers tuned in and thus rewards the advertisers who buy commercial time.

Fantasy magnifies this in a two-fold effect: It grabs the interest of casual fans who understand the offensive part of the game because defense is entirely arbitrary in fantasy football (and baseball too, but that's a different topic). Fantasy football is also the gateway for attracting more casual fans because its an easy excuse to compete with your friends, party (for drafts and post-season stuff) and possibly gamble money.

With this in mind, it's totally in the NFL's interests to neuter defensive play in order to cater to casual fans who probably care more about their fantasy team than any one franchise. Doing so provides absolutely no downside because any diehard fans that are alienated by rule changes will likely be replaced by more casual fans as well as rewarding advertisers and TV networks by providing the masses with an "exciting" game that is back and forth scoring like the NBA.

I miss the running game in the NFL.

When I was growing up watching the Chiefs (essentially, Marty era) the league was not so oriented away from running and defense. Today it's so slanted toward the passing game. They make the entire league center around the QB now.

In the NES game Tecmo Super Bowl, the RBs were king. It was a sign of the times that the easiest way to completely dominate the game was via the running game.

Yeah, I missed the running game too...from 1992 - 2001, KC went without a 1000 yd rusher.

I don't think it's even debatable that rushing was a much bigger part of the game in the 1990s.

Yeah, I didn't think about watching the first weekend of preseason and changed the channel last week after about 10 minutes. It just doesn't hold my attention like hockey, CFB, or CBB. And CBB was unwatchable at times last season because similar rule changes and crazy enforcement.

The NFL is already 50% commercials, and with games already being pretty predictable, might as well just turn it on for the last 5 minutes/4 touchdowns.
