Ranked 13th overall. We did improve the last half of the year when our running game was putting us in favorable yardage situations. I am not sure what it was in our 1-5 start- terrible and frustrating to say the least. If you remember some of those games-we were getting off-sides penalties and other negative plays-putting us in poor third down situations, in which we did not convert. This put a ton of pressure on the defense as well. Andy was calling a lot of horizontal and draw plays on third and long-which only made it worse.

https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/sta...conversion-pct

Here is another link to a story on 3rd downs. It kind of talks about the drop-off in Alex's completion % on 3rd down. I am sure this ties to a Lot of third and longs and massive pressure. Also all the dump offs had to hurt as well.

http://www.todayspigskin.com/afc-tod...own-struggles/

It also talks about the Pats being a 60% completion team on 3rd down. Amazing. That is pretty much what they did to us in the playoffs.

I think we will have the best players to support Alex since he got here. Having a balanced Offense with a top 5 (hopefully) running attack, is going to take a lot of pressure off the defense.

The Chiefs look to have a very solid / balanced team in all three phases.

I agree but then why stop at Bortles. You could add Carr to list of QBs better than Smith, he had 30+ TDs and around 10 INTs in his second year. At some point it cant just be about TDs unless you do it consistently. TD wise Smith is probably somewhere in the 20s for QB ranking.

If Bortles has somewhere in that same vicinity of TDs, yards, this year than I will say thats enough for me to put him ahead of Smith.

Well it's tough to say anyone in their second season is better than anyone, particularly at a complicated position like QB where regression is extremely likely.

I'm just saying, in their second years they've done more, individually speaking, than Alex has ever done. Since this list is based on the best players of 2016, meaning last season will be weighted heavily but they're gauging potential as well, guys like Carr and Bortles should certainly be ahead of Smith.

That is a double edged sword. A QB like Marino-who threw more TD's than anyone in his generation-will always be considered inferior to Montana-who was not even close in stats-due to 4 SB wins.

Many on here said they didn't care about Alex's stats or lack of-IF he finally led us to a playoff win. Well he did that. If we did not have so many of our play makers on the bench in NE- maybe we could have went farther?

This year they will be back- he has the best supporting players around him that he probably ever has. So I guess we will see what happens.

What are we going to see? Every year people have been saying the same shit. Alex has the best supporting cast he's ever had... Blah blah blah. We won't see anything new. After 12 seasons in the NFL you know who he is, a mediocre QB that won't blow a lead created by the defense and RBs.

Its all fun and games in the regular season when you can beat up on a handful of cave dwelling teams, but in the playoffs a team built like that needs to play perfect for 4 games against the best the league has to offer. Let me know when Alex can take the games where the defense doesn't make the stops and turns them into wins. Until that moment happens, I just don't ****ing care because it's going to be the same old tune every season.

It's a complicated argument.

Playoff wins are a team accomplishment. A QB like Marino gets lambasted because, at some point, you've got to strap the team to your back and do what needs to be done to bring home the 'ship.

I'm not holding a couple of guys in their sophomore season who play for the worst franchises in the league to the same standard. If the two become premier players in the league over the next 10 years and fail to bring their cities some postseason success, I'll have to.

81.

I think that's fair. He's earned that...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

It really isn't if you understand what you're arguing about. You're comparing a second year QB on a team rebuilding from nothing to a 10 year vet that slid into a built up squad.

Asking about playoff wins from Bortles is reeruned.

Alex Smith #81 on NFLN top 100 list

Alex is such a hard QB to rank among the others because he's so different. Really, I haven't seen anyone else like him. He's so overly conservative. He contributes most by simply staying out of the way.

It's strange. Kind of paradoxical.
