The Howard contract really blew up in their face.

For sure.

This is just kind of weird timing, especially with the contract details.

Howard was set to count for $6.375 million on the Chiefs salary cap, but his new cap number will be $5 million, which is the total of the money remaining from his signing bonus and a $2.5 million salary guarantee. Howard’s contract contains offsets so if he signs with another team the Chiefs should recover some of his salary. That money would be credited to the Chiefs 2018 salary cap.

Howard only played in 8 games last season and finished the year with just 1 sack when he was placed on IR. The injury likely locked in his $2.5 million guarantee, which vested to a full guarantee on the third day of the league year. These cases are rare but do happen from time to time where a lingering injury prevents a player with an injury guarantee from being released before the guarantee vests. If that was not the case here then the Chiefs made a pretty bad mistake.

If Howard does not sign with another team, Kansas City will have ended up paying him $8.76 million for 8 games. Even if he does sign elsewhere the offset will likely not exceed $775,000, the minimum salary for a player of Howard’s experience. So this one ended up a pretty big mess for the Chiefs, who have one of the tighter salary cap situations in the NFL with just about $1.5 million in cap space before this release.

I doubt anyone will sign him before the draft. The Chiefs would have happily paid him if he was healthy and ready to go.

He's still hurt and I'm glad Dorsey isn't holding onto these guys anymore.

You have to draft not just for the next year but with a long term vision. That's what Dorsey does.

This being said, I tend to think they won't be drafting the same position two years in a row but still think it is a possibility.
Will be nice having a killer DL and defense in general, but losing games 20-14 because our unsustainable turnover ratio and shifty QB play keeps us from ever scoring more than a handful of points.

Brokedicks gonna brokedick.

Howard's deal was to protect against what was an inevitable Poe departure. The term was "wait and see", but the dollars were significant enough to get him to sign.

Shit happens and the safety net is now gone.

Tired of the DL draft infatuation though, especially with our pop-gun offense. This almost guarantees another high pick spent on DL when upgrades need to happen at the offensive skill positions, none the least being a QBOTF.

How did the Chiefs get unlucky enough to possess two blue chip NT talents and see them both go up in smoke within 2 seasons?

Damn that's a raw deal.

Almost like Priest peacing out in 05 and then Larry in 07.

Not For Long.

Mainly though, they've gotta get atleast 1 better ILB, maybe 2.

Reuben Foster falling into their laps would be pretty nice.
When Derrick Johnson was kicking ass in 2013 before his first achilles injury, they were STILL terrible against the run. And when he went out in 2014, slow as molasses Josh Mauga didn't really make the run defense any worse.

Even if we bring in Hodges and draft a dude in rounds 1-3, I don't see the run defense improving dramatically from last year, if at all. Unless Bennie Logan is a destroyer of worlds for us, that is.

They were damn near last against the run last year. How the **** won't it get better with better players?

If they add 2 new ilbs and logan, it'll improve.
