How the NFL is Cheating Rookies out of Millions of Dollars
http://ble.ac/2tU9cdS
Not able to post on my phone but this a really interesting article. What do you think? Should NFL players strike? If you were an NFL rookie, what would your mindset be? |

No, I don't. It was a tongue in cheek remark to a tongue in cheek remark. Wazu's comment implies that these rookies are disposable. They aren't. Their talent is what makes the league watchable. We can't continue to act like these guys should be compensated the way we are at our desk jobs. As crazy as it sounds, they are very underpaid.

You're welcome to side whichever way you want. I don't get why the public always tilts so much support to the owners. I usually side with the players. Because in salary cap environments, it's just a fact that players are underpaid. I get why those caps are in place, but the total payroll is set by what everybody knows is probably not even close to a fair share of what the league actually makes. And when players get paid less, owners get paid more.
The NFL has managed to make it work because there are so many contracts to spread around. In the MLB, you have a big problem of asshole owners who won't spend on their team (Loria). And in the NBA, the cap has created a laughable parity mess. The owners are the problem, not the players. All players are asking for is to be compensated at a market rate. |

Maybe it has been suggested but give rookies an option... You can take this money structured just like it currently is or there is a second option where you are paid on the base salary and your completely dependent on your performance. If you give them the option I would think that would make things better.

The veterans threw the rookies under the bus knowingly. It was obvious when it happened.
Teams should be allowed to vote one player into free agency every year from each division. If a player is seriously outperforming his contract, the other teams in the division can vote him into freedom. It would be good for parity, too, because other teams could dismantle the first-place team one player at a time if you get a huge imbalance like the AFC East.

I would suspect how many veterans are willing to take less money to "help" their rookie brethren. CBA is the CBA. People will bitch no matter what agreement is in place. |

And that salary cap is set by a bullshit number about how much owners actually make. Every time the CBA rolls around, the owners claim they're struggling for money. Every single time the players union demands that they open their books. Every single time, the owners shut up and keep their books closed. It's because they are making an obscene amount of money but don't want to spend it on players. While it's true that veterans are "stealing" from the rookies, the truth is that the overall salary cap and rookie cap would be significantly higher if the owners opened their books up. That is an agreement that benefits both veterans and rookies. So yes, technically the NFL is cheating all players including rookies out of money. |
