**Official USA vs Portugal World Cup Game Thread**

USA vs PORTUGAL | 5 PM KICK OFF | ESPN
Arena Amazonia | Manaus, Brazil

United States moves on to the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup with a win. A tie or loss leaves a lot of other scenarios but lets just win this.

US faces a talented team that is having a bit of a crisis of confidence. They feature the best player (arguably) in the world in Cristiano Renaldo. If we can contain CR7 the rest of the team probably does not have what it takes to give us trouble.

Huge ****ing day for US Soccer.

FWIW, Every commentator, player, and person directly involved on soccer says the Championship League in England is the best comparison they have to the level of play in MLS. On the second level of the English soccer pyramid below the English Premier League.

Sort of a different issue but it's interesting all the hierarchies in the world. MLS gets crap for being a league where it's best and brightest get plucked by other places but this reality exists everywhere in the world even for big clubs...there is almost always a bigger fish.

There are *maybe* 4 or 5 clubs in the whole world or don't have to worry too much about their best players being snapped up by someone higher up the food chain. Hell Borussia Dortmind is a previous UEFA Champions League Champion...Bundesliga Champion...One of the top 10 clubs in the world and they have been raided by Bayarn Munich.

heh, yea hes one of "those guys" for sure. Basically a Manchester United fan, even though he has zero connection to England.

It's still funny to see people talking about Man City that way after they had sank to spending a year in League 1 like ten years ago.

It allllll has to down wit ownerships commitment. It used to be you could own an MLS team not give a suit about it and it was no big deal (*cough* hunt *cough*)

You have to find some way to capture the hearts and minds of people who love soccer in that area. Not always easy but when it happens it's amazing.

I follow ManU most closely, but that's largely because I have strongly identified with Wayne Rooney since he arrived on the scene. Seemingly pudgy pasty white guy with surprising tenacity and a nose for the goal. No matter how slim, stacked and fast he is in reality, he looks incapable of the things he accomplishes, until the ball is in the back of the net. When our new coach came to our HS team, I told him I was a striker. He sized me up and said, I'm making your my big strong center defenseman. I complied with the workouts all through the summer. Then in the first game I let him hold me out of the varsity first half, subbing on defense in the 2nd half. They scored 5 against in the first half, none in the second. Coach was beaming. But keeping me out of the first half of varsity left me elegiible for 1/2 of JV. I convinced him to let me play striker, scored 4 goals in 10 minutes, came off the field and started left wing varsity for the rest of the year. 17 goals and 10 assists.

Then there is the unaging miracle that is Ryan Giggs, this has led me to view and appreciate Nani and Van Persie. Dunno if my affinity will survive those four moving on. But it started with Rooney, not some front-runner status.

And not all people who follow other leagues are ****ing clowns not trying to come off like that I personally really enjoy the German league but those who love US Soccer that actively shun MLS...the worst.

Rooney looks like a guy who you'd see pummeling someone in a dark alley if he weren't playing football.

For some reason I got on with Tottenham years ago, maybe between they and all my other teams there is a pathology of mediocrity and the inability to win any major honors that I subconsciously find alluring.

We all can agree however that every Real Madrid fan is a clown. Or a fascist clown.

Tottenham is the only European club that I actively follow and root for. Maybe its because they are definitely the Kansas City Chiefs of the EPL.
