In this thread: All things related to the AL Champions.

Duncan's Official Team Record prediction: 90 wins
Duncan's Official Team MVP prediction: Eric Hosmer

I can't wait for this season to start. The AL Central should be a very entertaining race. I'll give brief thoughts on each team the Royals must contend with to make it back to the postseason - strengths and weaknesses.

Detroit Tigers:
Strength: The offense is still full of powerful hitters, and Miguel Cabrera may be healthier.
Weakness: Rotation is questionable after Price and Sanchez, bullpen continues to be horrible.

Cleveland Indians:
Strength: Great manager and a deep, versatile lineup.
Weakness: The rotation is a question mark past Corey Kluber, and even he has a few questions about him.

Chicago White Sox:
Strength: 1-2-3 combo of Sale, Quintana and Samardzija is pretty formidable. Offense is anchored by Jose Abreu, too.
Weakness: Defense still has major questions, and this team has 20 games to improve by if it really wants to make the playoffs.

The Royals will be a division winner IF ...
1) Ventura and Duffy combine for 375+ innings of high-quality work
2) Eric Hosmer delivers on his potential with a FULL season of success rather than bursts
3) The deeper bullpen lessens the critical load on Herrera, Davis and Holland
4) Lorenzo Cain stays healthy
5) Either Alex Rios or Kendrys Morales bounces back to 2013 form

Pretty awesome if used correctly.
Just think of a clutch situation where its a full count, people on base and needing a last out and this mofo comes out with some weird ass shit like this.
The batter is going to be like WTF and just watch the strike go by.

If he does this every pitch though... people are going to get used to it and it will be short lived.

As long as you don't stop your motion going forward once you've commited going towards home it's not a balk

According to MLB.com, the delivery is fine as long as Capps moves laterally and drags his back foot rather than jumping straight up.

This seems to meet the definition of "illegal pitch" in the MLB rulebook, which reads, "An ILLEGAL PITCH is (1) a pitch delivered to the batter when the pitcher does not have his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate; (2) a quick return pitch. An illegal pitch when runners are on base is a balk."

The problem is that everyone violates the first part of this rule. Every pitcher's foot comes off the rubber before actually releasing the ball, so it's a rule that is pretty much just ignored.

But players normally don't stretch it as far as Capps is. What MLB wants is his back foot to be more a part of the natural motion of moving forward.

I don't think Dayton really cares about RF defense since Cain has so much range ... Torii isn't a good defensive OF anymore, that's obvious...but Rios wasn't much better in the field last year than Aoki.

Now that Dyson (or Cain) will be in RF? OMG. It will officially be impossible to get hits, anywhere, in our OF. Tipped cap after tipped cap.

I think it's assumed that we'll platoon Dyson and Orlando, but I haven't seen anything official yet.

Excited for Dyson getting some solid PT. He's just a fun guy to have in the lineup. Routine ground balls are never routine, and he can swipe bags at will.

This is further validation for what DM is doing here, as well. Even 2 years ago, this injury would have hurt badly, but we've developed some solid depth at most positions. It's great.

You also lose the push off the rubber.

thank you. That's kind of a surprise but since the fifth outfielder will probably never bat, they can benefit from his speed as a pinch runner.

That's a big difference between Dyson as that 5th guy and Gore. I felt OK about Dyson getting ABs because he's never been bad at the plate. Gore is unknown at this point and may not even get a chance for an AB which limits options for the team.

Obviously nobody gets better when injuries happen though. Just glad that the depth is there now vs 5-6 years ago when there wasn't even depth for the people that played every day.
