I just had one of those "hey, I'm better at this game than I realized" moments. I'm running a sword and board tank, and I wanted to get Fade Wall off of Gaxkang. The drop rate is higher on Nightmare, so I did the whole fight at normal and then clicked up to Nightmare at the very end. Got Fade Wall on the first try, much to my surprise, but that's beside the point for this tale.
I just realized about 3 hours later that I never set the difficulty back to normal... So I've gone through a bunch of stuff on Nightmare, including the entire Arl of Denerim up until the point where you free Anora, and didn't realize it. Although I would have realized it in a few seconds when I go to attack Ser Cauthrien and she wipes out my entire party by herself. Anyway, my first run of the game was on Nightmare, so it's not like I haven't played the game on hard mode, but I can't believe I didn't realize I wasn't on normal for so long... |

It's an addictive game. I'm trying to get through the main game and the expansion and the latest dlc before witch hunt a week from Tuesday. Not sure I can pull it off.

Is Awakening worth it?
I'm currently in the Dalish camp area, about to throw down with Witherfang (when I find him). Got quite a bit accomplished this weekend: Completed the Orzammar area, killed Flemeth, boned Morrigan, and got my dual weapon mastery. |

Is there any reason to keep gemstones? Should I just sell them?

You need 10 garnets for a quest and you can turn in some of the gems to the dwarf ambassador in camp (although I don't usually do that).
As far as Awakening goes, I haven't played it yet. I wanted to finish a specific character before I ran it. It'll be worth it for me if for no other reason than to level characters over 30 with new spells and talents. Ditto for the last dlc. That's the one thing I haven't liked about the ME2 dlc: the level cap has stuck at 30, and I usually reach that 3/4 of the way through the game. |

Awakening is OK. I enjoyed it. The only thing about it is that some items you picked up from other DLC content don't port over to Awakenings. So your character will be missing some stuff if you played the DLCs.
There's also books you can buy, and I can't remember the name, but they'll basically let you completely redo a character's skill/spell/etc. tree. They're expensive, but it's fun to redo your character and experiment with different spell stuff.

Yeah. And they're not actually that expensive, 5 sovereigns as I recall. (I'm about to finish DAO with 600 or so...)
Really handy for knocking out a few of the main character class/skill/spell achievements, although when you get to Awakening, there are higher level (as high as 28 IIRC) skills available. |

Aren't malachites on that list of gems needed for a quest too?
And what does giving the gems to the dwarves do other than take them out of your inventory? |

Makes your dwarf army better for the final battle, just like the rest of the people who are there to collect from you. keg doesn't need any armies for that battle since he's so uber.

That's what I thought. i have been saving up all the runes i can find so that I can donate them when I get to that part. On a side note, my main is a 15 mage. And I'm doing the Fade right now, and wow is it easy on a mage. My first time was on a rogue of roughly the same level, and I ran around in golem form the whole time cause I kept getting owned. I'm not even using SotC. Mana blast the mages and then everything else is butter. |

The only gem quest I've come across is "Untraceable" in the Gnarled Noble Tavern (the dude behind the bar that gives you the shady quests...), which requires 10 garnet. |
