MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

I think this one probably put a lot of people over the edge. Things will need to change or the fans won't come out in the same numbers as this season (and this season's turnout wasn't always stellar).
Just go to any article or post from some Chiefs related page like Arrowhead Pride on Facebook and look at the comments section of the post if it's related to Alex Smith. At least half the fans seem to think Alex is a great quarterback and put the blame on anywhere else but him. I've seen numerous posts calling for OL, another runningback, better receivers, etc.

The average fan of this franchise is a ****ing idiot. Don't underestimate the ignorance of the masses. The fans on this page are not the average Chiefs fan.

yep, they dont remember that the other teams wr's drop passes as well. Its part of the game, receivers will drop passes from both teams.

The average NFL fan is stupid in terms of why a team doesnt get to that next level.

The Kelce and Maclin drops were critical drops in a low scoring game.. has been a repeated thing with Andy's KC team from what i've seen

Dude...it's like we are playing the game without a freaking QB. We can find better.

For what it's worth, Alex Smith has 30.

In his career. 141 games.

This is the best year financially to part ways with Smith. Foles is not long term, starting material, but he can damn sure do what Axl P. Coward does for a season.

Yes, Billay. This is correct.

Smith was the best option at the time. That time has come and gone. And if Reid does hang on to Smith then yes, there is a major problem.

No, they won't. Alex Smith will not see another playoff game as a Chief.

Rookies and upstarts could likely come in here and produce for peanuts. Statistically speaking, we'd have gotten more from Trevor Simian this season at a fraction of the cost.

The difference between the $16m Alex would get and the $10m Foles is a decent ILB, interior OL or another body on the DL. The option at least has to be considered.

So sad that most smart people can see that this was the biggest attribute to losing that game, not a couple throws that could of been made. I like how Alex still gets the blame for everything. Some of you have to give your head a shake and see the whole picture. Just like the Indy playoff game a few years back, guess that was Alex's fault, too.

I watched the game again last night and Alex was worse than I imagined. The delay of game at ****ing home was a disaster. A complete and utter **** up.

And then this mother****er throws an incomplete pass to stop the clock on the last drive that took forever and on the next play takes a timeout? What in the ****?!

Get him the **** off this team Andy. Good ****ing christ that was a complete **** up in the most important game. This gigabyte bullshit has got to stop.

He's not ****ing smart
