I only upgraded DVD to blu-ray for the movies that really benefit from HD. Such as Lord of the Rings for example. Or if I find a good deal on a blu-ray, such as Dawn of the Dead. It was 10 bucks at Walmart

Yes.
That's how I approach the upgrades. Yes, I upgraded from VHS (and some LD) to DVD over time (it wasn't overnight, but I had far fewer movies then). |

Before DVD is completely worthless, you should take them all to a resale shop and use the money for something not dust collecting.

With young kids, I absolutely loathe DVD technology. Ours are constantly getting scratched and messed up because the kids don't take care of them worth a shit. We end up watching old VHS tapes with the kids as much as DVDs, because at least they don't skip.

Blu-Ray would be advantageous.

Are they less prone to scratching?

Who here had a Laserdisc player back in da day?
I remember paying like $100 for my directors cuts of Abyss and Aliens like 20 years ago.

They cost so much that you won't let your kids handle them.

Backup software has saved many DVD's from damage. DVD Shrink is my friend. I just wish it was still kept up on development.

Laserdiscs rock. I remember paying $200 for my Stars Wars Triology Collectors Edition. Original cut of the movies, with audio commentary from many of the ILM guys on the alternate audio track. Still have those.
