Couple that with Sutton's inability to mold anything to the players he did have, and you have a problem. It seems to me that the 3-4 has less room for error due to it's reliance on Bigger linemen and interior linebackers. the players that played this season didn't seem all that suited specifically in the front 7 other than Ford and Houston as edge rushers and Ragland. Problem is, Ragland's too slow and can't cover, and Ford is a one trick pony that is a liability at everything else. Every single one of the players in the front seven other than those players is more suited to a 4-3 front. Every single one. And-if Houston reworks his deal to a cap friendly number, he'd be just fine as a RDE in the 4-3 with pretty much prototypical size and skillset. It'll literally be easier for him; he'll line up in the same spot basically he just won't drop into coverage ever unless it's some crazy zone blitz. Hitchens, DoD, Speaks, Kpass, Jones, Williams all project easily into their roles in a 3-4. Dee Ford does not, and it's unlikely we were going to pay him $15-$20 million a year anyway, so tag and trade is pretty likely. Spags or no, I think this transition has been something they've been planning if you consider last year's draft. I think they knew this was the spot where the contracts were going to allow them to make the change. |

I almost get the feeling that last year Big Red and the personnel side wanted to move towards a 4-3 and drafted/signed FA accordingly. They expected Sutton to adjust scheme accordingly but he didn't buy in. That's why he's gone today. We all know how loyal Reid is, but to fire BS on Tues following a Sun loss he really had to be pissed off for a long time to move that quickly against Sutton.
Like some of the people here, I think the defensive personnel match up/line up better in a 4-3 than a 3-4. Ford, Houston, Speaks and K-Pass can all put their hand in the dirt at DE. Jones, Nnadi, Williams can all play inside. I personally think Ragland could put on 10-15 pounds and put his hand down and be a DE as well if you wanted to pass on Ford or Houston doesn't want to restructure/take a pay cut. Ward and Fuller at CB, Watts, Lucas, Dirty Dan at the S spots and I think the talent is there for a top 1/2 defense. Draft a LB, CB and BPA in the first 2 rounds and you have already improved on paper.

It would be utterly stupid to just hand pick this guy because he used to kiss Andy's ass In Philly and totally ignore other candidates. We've just seen what Andy's friend has just done to our season. I for one would be more comfortable with a guy who has no ties to him at all and would be his own man. I hope to see at least three guys interviewed before they make a decision. Because this Spags guy's record is frightening tbh.

The issues isn't 4-3 vs 3-4. The question is, can you game plan for a specific team, and can you adjust quickly if your game plan is getting out game planned? Can you exploit matchups, and cover up match up weaknesses? If some dude comes in here with "His Scheme" and lives or dies by it, we are ****ed against good teams like the Patriots.

It's also about a coordinator and staff that can figure out how to best utilize the talent available to them and to make sure those players are in the best possible situation to succeed. Then on top of that, to be able to make adjustments based on opponent. Sutton was terrible at all of that. |

Meh. If this really was the guy we'd at least have heard about negotiations by now. At the very least we're doing due diligence, and that's all I can ask for.

I feel all this angst or excitement over one candidate over the other for DC is mostly irrelevant when it comes to the desire for a particular scheme or particular level of creativity of fresh ideas. While I admit scheme and ability to be creative and disguise coverages and such needs an improvement over Sutton...in my mind...the most important aspect of a new DC is their ability to address four things:
1. Ability to teach/develop player with untapped potential and "coach-up" players that are willing to work hard and desire to play above their talent-level. 2. Discipline & Accountability - no toleration of unforced errors and not knowing your job (See Dee Ford - lack of discipline cost us the game). 3. Tackling - It's so bad around the NFL, if you even do this marginally better than everyone else, your defensive rankings will rise dramatically. 4. Adjustments in-game - THE MOST FRUSTRATING aspect of Sutton. I don't think you need the next best, creative guy to accomplish these things. Although I'd love to have both. Point being...whether it's an exciting hire or boring hire, if you fix even 3 of the 4 issues above, we're all going to really like the results. If you change scheme and get crazy-creative and address none of the above-4 issues, I'm fairly certain we won't like the results.

We are not trading Dee Ford. He’s going to play under the tag this year.
