You can view the entire tournament bracket here as we go along, but here's the current state:



Please vote for the franchise in each pair that you feel is most deserving of being in consideration for the Greatest Movie Franchise of All Time. I'll put one of these up every day or two as we go along. So vote!

Possible Concerns and Responses:
  1. A franchise I like isn't on the list! Too bad. Nominations are closed. This is just a fun offseason diversion, but feel free to complain in the thread if it will make you feel better.
  2. There's something on the list that I don't even think is a franchise! Don't vote for it.
  3. There's something on the list that I don't recognize. Yeah, there are a few that I don't recognize either. If you feel generous, look it up and determine if you think it's worthy. Or just don't vote for it. Either option is allowed.
  4. The seeding seems weird (or there's something I have no idea how it got in there). The seeding is based on total estimated tickets from Box Office Mojo, but some older franchises were randomly seeded since we don't have any data available about their ticket sales. Again, if you don't feel something is deserving, don't vote for it!

Obviously everyone is welcome to interpret the question as they see fit, but it seems like a completely different (though correlated) aspect to me. Star Wars is about more than Luke Skywalker. LOTR is about more than Frodo.

I just have trouble buying into the idea that Indiana Jones is a "great franchise" when they haven't put out a movie that's been worth the price of admission for 30 years.

(I have a similar issue with The Godfather for the same reason, just for the record.)

Didn’t say it was ONLY about that. Just that it should be considered in the overall criteria.

And to your second point, in all fairness, they’ve only put out one movie in the last 30 years. Yeah, it wasn’t good, but I don’t feel like we should penalize them because their golden era was the 80’s. And Indy had a lot less to pull from, unlike MCU, which can continue to pull out story after story and character after character from an endless comic book library.

But we're selecting the greatest franchise of all time. Recency is irrelevant. Just because Abraham Lincoln hasn't saved the union in 150 years doesn't mean that he should lose the 'greatest president' tournament.

This contest has made me a bit dispirited about the 'State of Moviedom' Basically, they are all CGI filled comic book movies, or movies in the style of comic books - with the exception of the more literary Godfather and LOTR (and I voted for CGI filled LOTR) While I really enjoyed all these movies (maybe not every sequel), I feel cheated that we don't have more diversity of style/source from which to choose.

But if a president were reelected for 20 terms compared to a president who served a single term, wouldn't that be a pretty strong point in his favor (constitutional and lifespan issues aside)? Indy ran for three movies and couldn't ever recreate the magic. That's just a pretty weak definition of a franchise to me.

Yeah, it's not a rich diversity. Admittedly, part of that is the CP demographic profile, and that's fine. But yeah, there's a lot of CGI stuff and pretty rote stuff in the tournament overall. Maybe that's because a lot of great movies in other genres don't lend themselves to franchise development, though. It would be hard to make a continuing series out of some road trip movie or drama or Apollo 13 or Napoleon Dynamite. So maybe the problem is just that the franchise concept is self-enclosed.
