We got a memory foam about 6-7 years ago. I really liked the Sealy one that was about $2K, if memory serves. We bought it and slept on it for a few weeks but my wife was having trouble with it. So, we took it back and got a Serta memory foam mattress. It's been pretty decent (and was cheaper - about $1600), but I would have preferred the Sealy. I can't do a firm mattress and I think that is what she likes. If I sleep on a firm, I'll wake up with sore back joints. I'm starting to wonder if our next mattress will need to be something like a Sleep Number.
Love the memory foam for comfort but, there are a couple of drawbacks. The first one is that it doesn't dissipate heat very well. So, you will probably have to turn down the AC at night. Now my problem is that my wife is at an age where she's too hot or too cold, mostly too hot. So, we keep the room in the winter kind of cool (around 60 degrees). The problem is that the lower temperature makes the memory foam a little stiffer. And as I've said, I prefer the soft feel. It's not so bad that I wake up with sore back joints like when I sleep on a firm mattress, but it's not as good as it should be.

Check out Lucid on amazon. Have a friend that just got a cali king. He absolutely loves its. Have another couple that did another brand on amazon. Think it was like $800 for whatever king they picked. They also absolutely love it. I am debating on getting my next mattress ordered online.

As for ordering online, how hard is it to return if you don't like it?

We got a king size Modway Aveline 10" Gel infused memory foam mattress on Amazon almost a year ago and still love it. It was cheap (around $350). We did get a Lucid 2" foam topper at the same time and are still using it on the bed.

The topper seems like a better way to go.. my mattress (forget the brand at the moment) has a built in pillow topper, but that means I can't ever flip the mattress.... didn't think of that when I bought it.

Bought a Serta Perfect Sleep memory foam or something to that affect last summer. It was like $1,200 for the king size. They had their new 2018 model out on the floor for $2,500 and apparently this one was the 2017 model. So I bought last year's bed instead of the shiny new model.
I walked around and laid on a bunch of beds, from some of the $600 roll-up "casper" style beds to the $4000 Tempurpedics and this one was about as comfortable as I could find and I was fine with the price point. I like it quite a bit as it's medium-firm and doesn't sleep too hot. Beats the shit out of the queen sized pillowtop it replaced with sleep divots worn into it. There was this amazing mattress protector there that had cooling gel built into it and would constantly keep you cold. I really, really, really wanted to drop the $300 on it but my wife is an "always cold" type of person and put an end to that dream. |

Not too difficult. If you don't like the mattress most of the top companies will send a Fed Ex guy to pick it up and take it to a local charity. Usually have a 100 or so nights to try it risk free.

It takes most of the strengths of the temperpedics and then gives them conventional responsiveness. I like to switch positions while I sleep and worry that a memory foam mattress will create a 'divot' that will be annoying if I switch from back to side. Moreover, I don't like the 'cozy' feel of being down in the mattress like you tend to get with the temperpedics. And on the 'things you don't necessarily think about' front - I really do think marital activities would be odd on a memory foam mattress. I like a little spring back there and the responsiveness of the Purple (especially the new hybrids) will be better in that regard.

Purple for instance uses Denver Mattress. So if you have one of those nearby, swing by and try it then buy it through them so you can work with a local retailer if things aren't working for you. Additionally, you won't have to wait as long as they tend to have the most popular choices in stock. If you buy direct they generally have to get one off the assembly line for you and that takes longer. So if you have a company in mind, go to their website and give their customer service line a call. See if they have any local retailers and you might save yourself a little headache. The thing that has made the successful companies successful is outstanding customer service so as a general rule they'll be extremely helpful if they can be. When I spoke to the people at Purple directly I flat out asked them if I should order it online or through Denver Mattress and they suggested I work with the local shop for the reasons I listed above.

It took me a bit to get used to it but now everything else I have slept on in other peoples' houses and motels just feels too soft and ends up making my back hurt after a couple of days. Even after 25 years of use, that first time getting into our bed after being on the road just feels amazing. However, it is starting to soften up a little so we have been thinking about a replacement. I haven't liked the foam mattresses I've tried so plan on getting another innerspring. After reading a lot of positive reviews about Zinus (it's at 80% in the above link while Simmons is at 64%), I bought an extra firm one off of Amazon. What a pile of shit that turned out to be. It isn't very firm and any movement will cause it to sway back and forth. Also, there is no support on the sides. Sitting on the side will collapse it and I almost rolled out of bed a couple of times when I ended up too close to the edge and it collapsed. We lasted 4 nights before taking it off and putting our old one back on. Right now it's leaning up against the bedroom wall and is actually sagging under it's own weight. I'm pretty sure you could use our old mattress as part of a support wall. We aren't sure what to do at the moment. We will probably end up going with another Simmons but I am not sure they are the quality that they used to be. Part of the problem is also that we are 90 miles from the nearest dealer so pick up and possible returns are a hassle. I'm honestly debating about getting one of these. |

Holy shit - you're actually thinking about sleeping full time on a futon mattress?
Yeah, I'd say your wife and you are 'just out of sync' with other people. I had a futon that was by all accounts a nice futon and I'd still just as soon sleep on the floor...

My wife can comfortably sleep on the floor. I need a little more padding than that since i sleep on my side. What I am trying to find is more of a traditional Japanese mattress than the shitty "futons" they sell here in the furniture stores. To be honest, a mattress topper rolled out onto the floor might be good enough if it were firm enough to not just collapse.

Bought a sleep number bed last year and have never once regretted it.
Well worth the dough.
