I just attended a Babymetal concert - AMA

It was last night at the Uptown Theater. Not my video.

I try to have an open mind, especially with metal since its my favorite genre. But I just cant get past the shrill high-pitched voice. I dont give a shit what she's saying or what language, the voice doesn't match the band...at all. To each their own though.

I think the juxtaposition of J Pop vocals with Industrial Metal is interesting and cool. It's fun and different.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with any music snobbery. The combination of Japanese teen pop choreography and sound with the heavy metal band just doesn't work for me.

Babymetal is not a metal band. They are an idol group, specifically an alt-idol* group and just barely that. It doesn't mean that the music isn't good as their backing band is great and Su-Metal can sing. The other two, which I hear one was absent from the show last night for unknown reasons, are mainly dancers and do the high pitched child-like vocals. The whole point of it is to be cute and innocent as they are an idol group and the singing and dancing is the attraction.

*Generic term for idol groups that aren't the standard pop and sailor uniform groups. There can be many styles and looks which deviate from the standard idol mold. Most of them are not backed by a major label so their life as groups and membership can vary a lot.

Some of the people on here I'm convinced were part of the crowd that booed Faith No More off stage when they toured with Metallica, screaming "RAP SUCKS!".

FNM is one of the better bands I've ever had the pleasure of listening to in the last two decades.

I think it works when it is less high pitched and squeally. A lot of Babymetal's songs don't have those parts.

Another group but I think it is a good example:

This is much better. Still not my cup of tea, but at least it doesn’t sound like the singer of a little girls pop band singing to Metallica’s music.

As a musician I recognise how hard it is to become even a tiny bit relevant and this act is touring the world.
so while I respect thier musicianship and originality, it's just not a sound I dig.

Props to anyone who enjoys it, as that is what matters.

Hopefully, the next thing coming out of Japan are these ladies. They seem to want to but it is kinda up to their management. They use the cute maid costumes as a gimmick but their sound isn't.

At least they're playing instruments. Have you listened to the radio lately? It's all Drake, Ariana Grande and Niki Minaj
