Busting 4 myths about the Kansas City Chiefs defense

Busting 4 myths about the Kansas City Chiefs defense (it’s not all Bob Sutton)

https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2017/...all-bob-sutton

Sometimes you hear something that you’re not sure is true, and you just shrug and move on with your life. At least, that’s what you do if you’re a healthy human being. If you’re not, you obsessively research until you’ve dug into the truth of the matter. Unfortunately for me (and perhaps fortunately for you), I fall into the latter camp.

There’s a lot of talk about the defense right now, and deservedly so. After all, the pass defense looked quite poor against the Raiders merely a week after the run defense looked like a sieve against the Steelers. That’s... less than ideal. The Chiefs hung 30 on the Raiders but it wasn’t enough to win, and the defense wasn’t able to stop the Raiders from traveling 80 yards in under two minutes (well, with all the stoppages it was more like 20, but whatever) and scoring the game winning touchdown on Thursday.

When stuff like that happens, people are going to talk. And that’s what has happened. A lot of talk about the defense against Oakland has been based around a few key points........

It sucks because Gaines used to be a really good athlete who could at least stay with fast receivers in the slot. Since his ACL went out, he's lost it. He's done as an NFL CB.

Really think that if Nelson plays as good as he did last year, you'll see much better results from this defense.
He isnt done. Who are you to say so? He needs a new start with a new team. It will happen. I'll talk to u next year.

But I don't think the defense is this bad. I don't think it'll ever be elite, but it should be average to good.
Yeah.

When you replace Berry with Abdullah (a former starter and all around good player) it's a bit different than replacing him with a combo of sorenson and Murray.

Abdullah was a legit starting caliber safety. Our guys are not starting caliber players. Murray flashes... so I don't want to jump the gun on him.

I think Mitchell has been pretty solid. He's gotten targeted slot but he hasn't been beaten as badly as I'd thought, looking back at numbers

One thing as well fellas, this d has played some really ****ing good offenses thus far. I mean shit, the worst one they've played has been the chargers.

They looked beat up and gassed,

Gaines STILL covers well and is still a good athlete.

He has no ball awareness. He can't track the freaking ball. The guy fails to prevent catches all the time when he's in perfect position. His problems are not related to athleticism. They're related to him having shit ball skills. I can't count how many times that dipshit has given up plays simply trying to find the ball, failing, and then not recovering to make the tackle.

Pretty much

Sorensen was really good in his role last year. But now that he's being asked to do berry like things, that just won't happen:

Yeah I dunno which is worst to watch. I'd rather him get beaten badly than do everything right save the last one and get beat

The worst I ever saw him get beat was against Pittsburgh last year in the regular season.

He had perfect coverage, turned to look a the ball, couldn't find it. By the time Brown caught it he had run 10 yards upfield of a bewildered gains who was STILL looking for the ball after Brown caught it.

He's usually in good position when the ball is thrown. He either looks for the ball and screws up or, alternatively, he'll not look for the ball and get PI call.

Same thing happened last season @ Denver when he gave up that late, long TD.

I think it's playcall more than Alex. Either way, missed opportunity to put it away.
i totally agree, I've mentioned it also.

The one thing that was glossed over in the article was playing the CBs so far off the line of scrimmage. A number of Coopers catches came from him running free into gaps in the zone. Cooper has a reputation for struggling against the press. Sutton never even tried it.

Phillip should just start showing the Chiefs now, instead of waiting for a new start elsewhere... whats wrong with KC?

Oh im sure he is trying. Maybe harder than you could ever imagine. He can't do anything right at all according to the media and fans. Sometimes a new start is what is needed in life. He is a good kid and I pray he has the success he has worked so hard for.
