NFL reaches deal to play games at Tottenham’s new stadium in London

In April, there was word from London that English Premier League side Tottenham wanted to share their new stadium with an NFL team when and if the NFL put a team on that side of the Atlantic.

There’s no team heading there on a permanent basis, but there will be games at Tottenham’s building when it opens in 2018. The EPL team announced that they and the league have struck a 10-year agreement to play a minimum two regular season games a year at their stadium, which is under construction. The stadium is being built with the NFL in mind and will have two fields — grass for soccer, FieldTurf for football — that can be swapped out as needed.

“With growing enthusiasm for the NFL in the United Kingdom, we are committed to hosting NFL games in world-class venues and are excited to partner with Tottenham Hotspur to play games at their future stadium,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement from the team. “We share a vision and commitment to creating the best experience for our teams, fans and the local community.”

The deal does not mean the league will stop playing games at Wembley Stadium, which will host three games during the 2015 regular season. NFL executive vice president of international Mark Waller said, via Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal, that the league has a “great relationship” with Wembley and that securing another site in London gives the league more flexibility in scheduling as well as the opportunity to play more games in London as either a visitor or permanent resident
I wish I could quit the NFL sometimes.
I really do.

I can't imagine there is a kickback for the cities.

What rights would they have? Unless it is written into a contract somewhere...

Yeah, LA is really suffering without an NFL team all these years.

It's quid pro quo. The NFL wants a presence in all the major US cities because that's where the people are. No matter what, are the Bears really ever leaving Chicago? Cowboys leaving Dallas? And if they do, who is worse off for it, the team or the city?

The city is PAYING for the team to be there. To get eight games of revenue? Maybe 10? Often the city doesn't even get concession rights even though they OWN the ****ing stadium. It's ridiculous. Makes no economic sense at all.

The NFL's product is in demand, you can either compete for it or let it move on to someplace that will.

Not if the cities showed any economic sense. It makes no economic sense for any city to bend over for the team.

Massachusetts and Foxboro told Kraft "no" when he was looking for massive public funds to build Gillette, or a stadium in Boston. He came REALLY close to moving to Hartford, which was offering him some kind of completely absurd deal.

We still said no. Ultimately he stayed, because Boston + Providence > Hartford, and because he is a Massachusetts guy and didn't want to be "the guy that moved the team out of Massachusetts."

Me? I didn't give a frig where he built his stadium. Hartford is still in New England, and I don't attend games anyway.

1. More people and $$ in London and Europe than in those places.

2. More $$$

3. It might have something to do with making bank.

4. Probably some kind of money angle that the NFL has studied to death.

More honestly -- first London, then all of Europe. Ultimately, there is probably a long-range plan for NFL Europe. Then the UltraSuperBowl (whatever) where the NFL Europe champion plays the US champion.

No, there isn't really money there. Sure, they can add teams. Go to 36 or whatever. Some rich ****s will pay big dollars to put teams into wherever. Portland or whatever. But that's small dollars long term. You're not going to develop a huge new following of football fans doing that.

The NFL probably looks at FIFA and says "we want to be like them, but without the corruption scandal". Developing a football fanbase in Europe is apparently step 1. They want 300 million new NFL fans, not Portland, Oregon...

The issue will be dilution. Soccer is a sport played by kids worldwide. American football is not. But if American football catches on elsewhere, it could really undermine something like rugby, if the $$ was much bigger in football.

And it's only a matter of time before the NFL panics and creates a bunch of safety measures that make the game less watchable. Only a matter of time before you see a talent drain in the NFL. And how long can they keep upping ticket prices before real fans say "enough"? And sorry, but every new NFL marketing twist appeals to the common fan and pisses off the avids. You can't lose avids. These guys pull in sponsors and spend a shitload on merchandise. These are guys who keep filling stadiums even in off years.

Another comparison... what happened to the NBA after the amazing success of the Jordan era. It floundered. Who in the NFL is marketable outside of Peyton and Brady? Rodgers maybe. But then who? Meanwhile, the NBA is exploding with mega stars. The MLS is starting to grow in popularity. The NFL is starting to compete with other sports.

I mean... look at Chiefsplanet. People don't seem to care about the Chiefs like they used to. And I don't think it's just a culture of losing.
Counterpoint: There is nothing ****ing else to do on Sundays in the Fall and Winter.

The concussion issue is going to be a big fat zero. Even if you cut youth participation in half (which won't happen anytime soon), they will still want to watch football even after growing up never playing it, and there will never be a shortage of athletes. Half the people I know who are huge NFL fans either never played it or played very little and not in high school.

People are nowhere NEAR as outraged as you seem to think they are about prices or these random stupid little issues you are obsessing over.

NBA and soccer, lol. I am a HUGE baseball fan, and I am very glad it is a summer sport because if they had to compete with the NFL every weekend, it wouldn't be nearly as successful. If the Chiefs are not terrible, I'd pick their games on sunday over the Royals. Nothing can beat the shield.

There are plenty of things to do on Sundays in the fall. Winter...not so much, but there's only a month or so or the regular season left by the time the weather gets really bad.

If you live in SoCal or have a great desire to hunt/fish every weekend, sure. That doesn't describe most people, and there is not a lot of more compelling alternatives for a few hours in the afternoon unless your team happens to suck.

If your local football team is competitive or good, you aren't going to have a lot of people who would have been football fans recently now go "eh.... I'd rather watch a matinee, whats on, lets check rotten tomatoes"

Thing is, the avid fans are going to watch no matter what.

This is how ESPN ruined Monday Night Football. They'd bring D-list celebrities into the booth, they had those talent competitions on the halftime show, they pimped ABCDISNEYESPN recording artists during the show, they make the whole broadcast suck for actual football fans because football fans are going to watch regardless.

Why is there a choreographed song and dance show at Super Bowl halftime? Because it draws women in and others who might not be interested in the game. I think we have all heard women who said they were there for the food and the halftime show.

It's about the event and not about the game, because die hards will be there regardless

Yeah, this.

Bottom line -- the NFL already owns your ass, and they know it. You're not going anywhere. So how do they make more $$$? Not by paying more attention to YOU, but by dragging in Suzy Housewife somehow, or whatever.

How much football discussion is on Cp vs 5 years ago? How Many complain that arrowhead is getting dull. How many times are regular fans getting squeezed out by rich ticket payers who sit down the entire game? And it's not just a KC issue.

And I don't know many avids who like the pass friendly rules. The dominance of fantasy football. I don't know any season ticket holders happy about losing a home game to England. There are a ton of nfl decisions that piss off the avid fan in favor of the casual fan.
