Ozzy: Being in a band is dying art
Do you agree?
Ozzy Osbourne says the rise of technology in music means bands are losing the ability to jam and shape ideas together. And the Black Sabbath icon – who's the subject of a free TeamRock iPad supplement – has first-hand experience of the phenomenon. Ozzy tells Noisey.com: “The computer age is taking over and there's a lot of trickery. I've actually seen guys in bands. You go, 'Do you want to jam?' and they go, 'Jam? What's that?' Just playing anything together. They can't do it. 'I'll have to consult my computer first.' The art of being in a band is dying.” The singer says he's always proud when another musician is influenced by Sabbath – and he doesn't just mean by the music. He says: “I have people at Ozzfest going, 'Man, if it wasn't for Sabbath... we owe you so much.' I go, 'What part of this is influenced by Sabbath?' I get where they're coming from but it's not the music, it's what it says to the people. “Metal has never had any rules. If you want me to do something, tell me not to. I've never played by any rules. My sole concern is to get on that stage and give the audience a great day out. I want to give my heart and soul when I play, and that's God's honest truth.” Ozzy recently released his retrospective set Memoirs Of A Madman – after revealing that Sabbath are gearing up to record their final album next year. http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news...d-is-dying-art |

You can find audio files of Death Magnetic that were re-mastered for the video game Guitar Hero III. It's an underrated album when there's actual dynamic range going on.

Yes, and we didn't find any under 30. We are all experienced pros, and we needed someone that didn't need us to hold his hand the whole time.
We need players that know how to improvise, that know scales, that know when you tell them the chord progression is 1-2-5 what you are talking about. That when we have a guest show up and ask him to sit in with us on stage can follow his song even if we don't know it, and do it well enough that the people watching don't know we've never played the song before. Young musicians just don't do this kind of stuff anymore. For example, in another band our guitar player quit and we needed someone for a gig in less than a week. This lead guitar player stepped up and learned the songs and did very well. Last edited by splatbass; 10-21-2014 at 09:29 AM.. |

We've had to do that with drummers...but it's way way easier with drummers than...anybody else hahaha. I don't think I could be in a band without Ryan at this point. It doesn't sound appealing to me. But if you ever need a sub (guitar or bass) hit me up. I play them blues and rock and rolls... Edit : obviously you wouldn't need a bass player, but I can improvise over a minor pentatonic on guitar

Ozzy is right. Good old fashioned musicians that play real instruments are only found at blues concerts.

Where's the incentive to learn to play an instrument and start a band. Kids don't want to be broke touring the county in a van and not making any money. It's so much easier to make shitty EDM music on a laptop.

It's so true that it's a cliche...but if you want to make money, don't become a professional musician. Become an engineer. Or a computer software designer. Right on.

If you meant to quote me and are saying Ozzy isnt a musician, I totally disagree... he's a singer and arranger/composer, whatever you want to call it. While the riffs all came from guys like Lee, Wylde etc and they get writing credits, its Ozzy who puts it all together, under his vision, therefore its his music. That makes him a musician. To my knowledge, James Brown didnt play an instrument either... but he oversaw all of the jam sessions and molded the riffs that came out of those sessions into songs through his own vision by choreographing the music. Mayfield, give me two high squeals here, drummer I want a UH UH BOOM there etc. Ozzy is definitely a musician. |

I don't think Ozzy is quite the same type of bandleader as James Brown. Zakk and Sharon run the live band, and they hire producers to run things in the studio. It's pretty much been that way since Ozzmosis...consequently, that is probably the last Ozzy record I bought or ever cared about. Everything he's done for the past 20 has pretty much sucked, except for Sabbath...and except for Geezer and Tony, that record sucked too. Lol
