Most of these bad boys from the list below, are from the late 70's and early 80's and they haven't made anything that sounds the same since.

The raw clean power just isn't in todays products. I'm going to hunt something down for the man cave out in the shop to abuse the neighbors a bit. If you have some old school stuff, what is it, Yamaha, Sansui, Murantz or something else?

All this is going out in the shop. I will let you guys know how it all sounds when I get it all installed. That should only take about 15 minutes once the receiver hits gound zero.

Sure beats the typical Aiwa mini system (which may or may not have a functioning CD changer) that seem to turn up in most of my friend's garages.

Yeah, I did my homework and I have no doubt it isn't up to the "CrazyHorse super package," but it should have very clean sound and have more than enough juice to sling some notes.

Im almost embarrassed to say how much it cost. I have over 10 Gs in my home set up and I never pay retail.

As for my recovery..... It hasn't gone very well. But I go to St Louis this week for my 1 year evaluation. thats a year I didn't have. So Im not bitching. Quality of life is at about 70% if you can put a number on that sort of thing. So Im not doing too bad. Im blessed and happy with how things are going.

Yeah, Technics and Kenwood. I remember. Fisher was another. Marantz was for rich people. Still is. But you can find some mid level Marantz stuff now thats pretty tight.

It will make anything in that list sound like a $50 garage sale system.

I'm sorry to hear you are not back to 100% yet partner and I hope the evaluation goes well for you in St Louis. It sounds like you have been through a lot and full recovery could take awhile. I'm glad you are doing as well as you are at this point. Hang in there and continue to get stronger. Oh and rock on sound blaster.

Don't slam Aiwa. I had an Aiwa receiver running the system in my bowling alley (ran 2 ohm for 3 years) and it rocked. Of course I had a Crown 1100 watt amp juicing my JBL 1500GTi's from 200Hz and below, but that Aiwa kept going under some horrific conditions.

I was impressed. Aiwa actually put out some good shit for a couple years back in 97-98'.

I have a older Yamaha I got at Beatty Stereo years ago. But the main thing that I have that absolutely kicks ass is a pair of Klipsch Cornerhorns. Nothing was ever that good for the retail market. They totally rock.

The old Klipschorn is the only old school speaker that I have heard that holds its own against some of more recent high end speakers. My dad has a pair driven with a McIntosh amp from the 70's and they are excellent for music. I haven't checked in a while but I think Klipsch is still selling the old Heritage series.

Not ripping at all, sincere Q, what lead to your decision on the Paradigms and particularly the B&W woof? ie, how many other rigs did you audition? What made you like those better. I've heard good things about Paradigms, but a slight price point up from your Paradigms are some entry Dynaudios, and I know those are among the best sounding speakers I've ever heard.
I know B&W has mighty high end stuff, but it seems like everyone is getting left behind by SVS/HSU/REL in the realm of low end clean power, and often for cheaper.

Again, not criticizing, more of a chance for you to tout your system. Course you could probably make the Acoustamass sound good with a Lexicon/Marantz front end.

When I was at Mizzou back in the late 1970's, I shared a house with three DJs. We had killer stereo gear. Techniques receiver, crown amp, Bose speakers, Denon direct drive Turntable (with a discwasher, a must have), Pioneer reel to reel, Nakamichi cassette deck. All state of the art, expensive stuff back then. Clean vinyl still sounds great on a good system. We could rock the house, and did, daily.

Now all my modern day stuff is Yamaha and Polk Speakers on my main system, Denon and Infinity on my den system. Not as many watts, but surround sound makes up for it!

A lot of current "high end" (a price designator more than anything at this point) speakers really aren't very good. Two of the worst sounding speakers I've ever heard were over $100,000.00 for the pair. You've got to consider that transducer technology is way over a century old (including electrostatic and planar designs), and a lot of that technology is nearing a "lost" state in terms of speaker designers understanding wave form propagation, phase coherency, etc. A lot of the high end designers are woodworkers before they are physicists. The "old" Klipschorn design (and the others in that line like the La Scalla) are well designed products that have stood the test of time because they are just that - well designed products that use the same technology that just about every single speaker on the planet is still employing.

I remember pulling a crossover on a monitor that retailed for $6,500.00 a pair, and there wasn't ten bucks in parts on the board. Utterly embarrassing, but people tend to have this "get what you pay for" concept, and think that because a product is expensive, it's got to be good.
