This. Hence discussion of the "marriage penalty" in the tax code that needed to be fixed, some years ago.

Since there are no children involved. I would suggest using 1 attorney to write up the Divorce Decree.
If you both use a lawyer-you both lose. All they will do is rack up billable hours and screw you anyway they can. They will draw it out for as long as they can while telling you that you are "winning" and in the end have a huge bill to pay to the bloodsuckers. Don't drag your personal feelings into court-it will only cost you more than what you have already lost. Best wishes and good luck. |

Closing in on 10 years with the same guy. 2 kids, life insurance and a will. All pretty similar stats as my state sanctioned disaster all those years ago.
As with both guys I'd do anything for them. Wipe their ass. Work my ass. Whatever. I just wont be legally tied to another person ever again.

You will make it through all the financial stuff. Just keep in mind that one day, very soon you will be able to think about her with another dude and you won't bat an eye. Any "love" emotion you may have had will be completely gone. It is pretty cool how the human brain works. You don't have kids so it will be even faster. Just think about the nice woman/en you will meet going forward(wait til divorce is final, you don't want that to figure into any settlement). You have a whole life ahead! Really, enjoy.

There are advantages in other areas, such as healthcare decision making, right to receive inheritance, etc., but these can all be done through contract instead. Then you have healthcare insurance and other things where the economics of marriage tend to be beneficial.

Make sure you also have a health care proxy, and possibly a power of attorney as well (springing, so that it only kicks in if you are incapacitated). One more area where marriage is HUGELY beneficial -- death/inheritance where you have significant assets. There are no inheritance taxes as between spouses. If you are not married, then there will be a significant inheritance tax under certain circumstances.

Right, but if they were unmarried, filing individually, then they would each get the individual standard deduction, and their own separate exemptions. As a GENERAL rule, where the incomes are roughly similar for both spouses, then being married means paying somewhat MORE in taxes than they would if they were unmarried. If there is a big discrepancy in income, then being married is better, tax-wise.

I think there should be significant advantages to being married. But monetary ones never interested me much.
