Great to hear on how your son is doing!

I hope he's had a kickass speech therapist he's worked with!

Thank you man. I'm a fiercely private person but I want to share a couple things.

First off...
Autistic kids aren't usually affectionate but Hunter is different. Whenever I get home or pick him up at school, he gets so excited. He runs as fast as he can and yells "DADDY!"
It always makes me smile, no matter my stress level.
He and I have always had a different, special bond. I can read him better than anyone.
A few examples of his intelligence...
He absolutely loves messing around on my iPad. I make a point of changing the access codes every few weeks. (6 digit)
I only have to tell him once, he can not play with it for a week and remember the code. He has a photographic memory with numbers.

The kid could read and write before he was two years old. First with basic words and then, suddenly three syllable words.
His handwriting is great. Almost perfect when he concentrates.

He can math like a mofo too.
Addition and subtraction at a 2nd grade level. He's only five.

His only obstacle is speech. However, he improves more and more each day.
I handed him his chocolate milk today when we got home and he said, "Thank you daddy, I love you!"
That was it for me... Done. That's the first real complex sentence he's put together without prompting.
What a great day for him and I.

Just fantastic stuff. The fact he shows affection is a great building block for all social interaction and great for you as a parent. The ability for kids like Hunter to have that photographic memory is soooo amazing. Actually makes me kinda jealous!

It's stories like these that make me think about working with kids instead of the oldie moldies in my professional. My friend from school runs different Autism speech treatment groups in schools around the valley here. She loves it and really gets a kick out of the funny things the kids say.

My wife's brother has Autism and does not show affection. Never has and never will. It's hard as a parent when it's like that. However he's extremely intelligent and loves sports. He's a college graduate even. If I've got a question about something that's happened, he's got the memory to recall it. It's like a sports encyclopedia in his brain!

I'll donate tomorrow but my wallet is in my car and I'm too lazy to get it right now.

Love hearing the stories.
