Disturbing Miley Cyrus Photos
A freaking 15 year old. WTF were her parents thinking? For all of you whose 5 year olds are watching Hannah Montanna, you better watch who they're emulating:
Also this lovely number of her and her dad: Story here. |

The reason teens (especially girls) are getting sluttier is because teens have been protected from adulthood instead of prepared, and when they hit puberty their bodies are saying the exact opposite of their (parent/church-parrot) minds.
Is there a pretty good reason why society wants to discourage teen sex?.. Yeah, I suppose there is. But the problem isn't the sex or the sexuality. It's that we don't train kids to make good decisions, or be responsible. We PROTECT them from having to make decisions at all. When the time comes, the decisions they make will be bad ones. |

Or better depending on the way you look at it.

Well I think there are better parenting tactics and ideas than shielding your children from what is life....
When people go apeshit about a boob but some guys face exploding is just part of the general CSI plot I think that's a problem. |

I would have to agree. People in the States are waaay too uptight about sex.

I often have to think a couple times before agreeing to type in my phone number on a standard purchase, and thats with a respected corporation. There is no way in HELL I would e-mail pictures of myself in a compromising pose to ANYONE, because once its on the net, you've completely lost ownership and control over it, and its only a couple careless forwards away from being e-mailed everywhere and/or plastered on someone's web page. With kids though, its like they think they have some kind of protection or anonymity that doesnt exist. They have no concept of danger on the web. (and I'm not talking about physical danger, just pure horrifying shame) Since we didnt grow up with it, we stepped into the internet cautiously with some suspicion, accepting only what we wanted to use. These kids that are born into having the internet, its like they have this instinctive trust that this technology will never turn on them in any way. Bottom line: if your a parent, you need them to KNOW that they should never type or e-mail any words or pictures that they wouldnt be completely fine with having everybody in town and at school read and see. Once your embarassing picture or careless remarks are out there, you could be haunted by it for a damned long time.

Now that I think about it, if someone had a teenage girl who seems really naive, it might be good to show her these Miley pics as an example of what could happen (on a smaller scale, e-mailed all over school) if she does the same thing with her friends. They get in a fight (like girls always do), her former friend decides to embarass her, and thats it.
pictures in the old days were different, maybe you could grab it or someone would confiscate, it was a pain in the ass to make tons of copies of a photograph, but forwarding stuff like this takes no effort at all.

Part of the problem is what you and Mecca are talking about. We've got a sex=sin attitude. But that's just scratching the surface. We've taught our kids not to think critically about anything at all. We've taught them that an education is nothing more than memorizing some stuff until you take a test. We've taught them that their own feelings sexual or otherwise are foolish. We've taught them that parents know what's best (but we all know that parents are guessing and have little to no more education than the kids). We make them stupid, and when they talk we realize how stupid they are and instead of fixing it, we ignore them. So they get louder. Eventually, they become stupid teens who rebel against their stupid parents, and they wind up engaging in stupid, extreme and risky behavior. Look no further than shows like "Jackass" and you'll see what I'm talking about. For many, that rebellion manifests itself with drugs and violence. Sex is the least of our problems.

Sounds like those two really dropped the ball. I also think there's something fundamentally f*d up in the country's attitude towards the human body. Then again, we were founded by people so tight-assed the English kicked them out. I'm more along the lines of the oriental proverb.."Nakedness is often seen, but seldom looked at". I think our messed up idea that nudity=sin and such has a lot to do with driving the deviance in our society. JMO.

Suppressing sexuality as a teen is FAR more damaging to a psyche than goofing around and taking some provacative photos. |

Aside from that, you can try to raise a kid to be the most Liberal, free, frank, and open person in the world if you want, but aside from this belief and behavior making her stick out in itself, thats not going to stop everyone else in the school from teasing her mercilessly if she does something everyone else perceives as embarassing. Kids can be cruel, and you have to be practical. Aside from that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with our culture encouraging restraint and some small (and shrinking) level of modesty, if for no other reason than the vast majority of people are unpleasant to look at without clothes.
