NFL endorses criminal-justice reform bill in the midst of anthem debate

The National Football League, still in political crosshairs over whether players should take a knee during the national anthem, is throwing its weight behind another cause in Washington’s debate over racial inequality: criminal justice reform.

The NFL’s spokesman said on Monday that the league has decided to endorse a bipartisan bill to reduce mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug offenders, eliminate “three-strike” provisions that require life sentences and give judges more latitude to reduce sentences for certain low-level crimes.

“We felt that this was an issue over the last months, as we have continued to work with our players on issues of equality and on issues of criminal justice reform, that was surfaced for us, and we thought it was appropriate to lend our support to it,” NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said Monday during a conference call with reporters.

The owners appear to be seeking middle ground between football players and their critics during a heated national debate over the growing phenomenon of players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. It is not clear what effect the NFL’s effort will have on that debate — or on President Trump, who has fueled much of the vitriol against kneeling players through his personal and official Twitter accounts.

So, hoping to curry favor with the players who are kneeling, the NFL is endorsing a piece of soft-on-crime legislation. The optics of that are amusing.

Goodell's winking and nodding at the kneeling players will probably just encourage them to take it further, not make them respect the country again. The NFL will not be better off for bowing to them. Look at Mizzou.

The NFL doesn't seem to understand what's happening here at all. Fans do not want the NFL to be political. Fans are not going to be amused by Roger Goodell wading into politics. ESPN has already made this mistake by becoming another politicized media outlet... it's fascinating that Goodell thinks the way to resolve the fan ire over this conflict is to make the NFL more political.

No, it isn't. Because we are throwing people in prison at an alarming rate for misdemeanors where a fine or community service is more than adequate. And we are overdoing the sentencing for small crimes due to minimum sentencing laws. In case you were wondering, door #1 in prison leads to a hefty taxpayer expense, door #2 actually brings money and value back to the community. But hey, as long as our prisons are full, we maintain occupancy rates and keep our prison workers employed, amirite?

Read up about Brattons broken windows policing theory. It is a policy of harassing people for small crimes. It's one thing if you believe removing turnstile hoppers deters crimes. But many PDs have used this to straddle a fine line between legal and illegal search and seizure, which is a constitutional right. Stop and frisk has a wide window. And loitering and broken taillights charges are often used as an excuse for cops to randomly search you or your vehicle, even though you were barely doing anything wrong.

Contrast that with community policing where cops invest a lot of time and energy in becoming known as a face of the community.

No, I don't support lashing back at a cop that stops you. But when the PD culture is built around an extremely aggressive stance toward arrests, there is greater opportunity for backlash. There are plenty of op Ed's written by ex cops saying they're tired of being the bad guy and being put under so much pressure to hit arrest quotas. If these things were done for the public good, that's one thing. But does anyone think more arrests has made our communities any safer? Then what's the point of doing it?

A third strike could be something as trivial as possession of weed, a positive test, or drunk in public if its a parole/probation violation.

OK, then maybe we should fine every business that posts blue lives matter on their retail storefront in communities where this is an issue of political debate. Or does politics only matter when it supports your opinion? The nfl has been hawking pro military and pro police displays for years. They've been championing lots of causes from domestic abuse to anti drug campaigns. The nfl has been political for years.

If jail doesn't stop you from doing illegal shit, then jail it is. I don't mind my tax dollars being spent to keep people in the slammer, it's money well spent.

Again, these people (of all races and ages) know jail is where they're headed, so they need to make a choice, "don't do it" or "go to jail." They are choosing jail no matter how you want to spin it.

In missouri, people are not being thrown into prison at an alarming rate for misdemeanors. Unless you're referring to things like charged and prosecuted for a third DWI, which becomes a felony, and even then it's not an alarming rate.
