Old-Ass Andre Johnson will be released if Texans can't trade him

Report: Andre Johnson will be released if Texans can’t find trade partner

Quote:
One of the standout wide receivers of his generation is set to leave Houston.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are allowing Andre Johnson to seek a trade. If Johnson is not dealt, he will be released, the Chronicle reported.

According to the Chronicle, the Texans told Johnson he would have a lesser role in 2015, which led him to ask for his departure from Houston.

Johnson is slated to make $10 million in salary in 2015, per NFLPA data.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2003 draft, Johnson has played his entire 12-season career with Houston, catching 1,012 passes for 13,597 yards and 64 TDs. He has made seven Pro Bowls.

While Johnson turns 34 in July, he should nonetheless appeal to clubs looking to add a proven veteran presence to their receiving corps. He caught 85 passes for 936 yards and three TDs in 2014.

A Miami (Fla.) product, Johnson quietly starred on a string of mediocre-to-poor Texans teams early in his career. The franchise finally made the playoffs in 2012, his ninth NFL campaign.

If Johnson’s Texans career is indeed at an end, he will leave having caught 10 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown in his final game with the club, a 23-17 victory over Jacksonville in December. Though the Texans took care of business in the season finale, they fell just short of the playoffs. In many ways, it was an apt end to Johnson’s run in Houston — the star wide receiver doing his job well while the franchise fell just short in the end.

With Johnson likely gone, third-year wideout DeAndre Hopkins will become the Texans’ go-to receiver, a role he’s probably ready to assume.

Nevertheless, it will be jarring to see Andre Johnson, one of the Texans’ all-time greats now and forever, playing for someone else.

Chiefs are paying 17 million to get 9-7 out of Alex Smith playing the toughest schedule.

Houston Texans are paying nothing to get 9-7 out of dumpster QBs playing an easier schedule in which those trash QBs were able to beat the Titans and the Raiders, something Alex Smith couldnt muster up.

But Alex gets a pass cause of trash OL and trash WRs? So Andre Johnson gets a pass for trash QBs then right.

Which is my point, Andre Johnson wants a QB upgrade like Alex Smith wants WR upgrades. But I don't think Andre Johnson views Alex Smith as a QB upgrade. Because he got the same results in Houston as Alex Smith can give him. More of the same.

Andre needs to be on a team that's already a conference finalist type of team.

That's what I said. Direckshun thinks Alex is that type and the Chiefs are a few wins away from that.

I'm curious to see the afc structure next year. The Colts should be good, but they're gm is who knows what. They'll have luck and play in a terrible division, so they'll be there.

The broncos are an enigma with the whole manning dilemma.

The Pats franchised their kicker and may end up losing McCourty and iirc, could lose Revis due to contract issues.

I think Pittsburgh offensively is great, but their defense just doesn't seem to be good added to the fact that they're changing d styles. Then there's the Ravens who require magic each year to squeek in the playoffs.

The chiefs could have a really solid defense, but unless the offense becomes more explosive, they're still bringing a knife to a gun fight.

The AFC is going to be a bunch of middling teams unless the Pats have some more tricks up their sleeves.

The real story will be if Seattle can fight off being snakebitten by the goalline interception, otherwise it'll be Green Bay's conference to lose.

Yeah, Im anxious to see what it looks like after free agency.

Would like to see Jacksonville get suh and a wr.

But yeah, the afc just doesn't seem like there's aNY real powerhouses. Seems to be a passing of the tourch.

The Chiefs are paying Alex Smith to get a Super Bowl. But he's not Aaron Rodgers -- he's not turning Junior Hemingway and Ryan Harris into Jarrett Boykin and Brian Bulaga. He needs more talent to surround him.

I'm not giving the guy a pass, I'm recognizing reality.

There's a middle ground between your fatalism and Alex Smith homerism. I occupy it.

Has AJ himself said that?

He's likely to end up on a playoff contender's roster. Could be us, if we offer the situation he's looking for.

Could not be. I'm not going to quit on free agency because the cap is tight and I don't like who we have under center.

You are. That's fine, that's how you live your life. I'm fine with our difference in philosophies.

AJ as a Chief = wide receiver version of Patrick Surtain.
