Chiefs Eagles Set to Hire Doug Pederson As Head Coach - Page 5

The Eagles are set to hire Doug Pederson as their new head coach, a league source tells Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer (Twitter link). Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer confirms (via Twitter) that Pederson is the Eagles’ man. The Chiefs offensive coordinator remains alive in the postseason, so Philadelphia won’t be able to make the hiring official until after this weekend’s game, at the earliest.Doug Pederson

A former Eagles quarterback, Pederson has only been connected to the Philadelphia job and none of the other NFL head coaching vacancies. In addition to having played for the Eagles, he also coached with the team during Reid’s tenure, serving as an offensive quality control coach in 2009 and 2010, then as the club’s quarterbacks coach in 2011 and 2012.

Pederson, who has been Kansas City’s offensive coordinator since the team hired Reid as its head coach in 2013, was one of six head coaching candidates to interview with the Eagles. Three coaches that were considered to be strong candidates for Philadelphia have since been hired elsewhere or withdrawn from the process — Adam Gase landed with the Dolphins, Ben McAdoo was promoted by the Giants, and Tom Coughlin removed himself from consideration.

In addition to those candidates, the Eagles also interviewed in-house assistants Pat Shurmur and Duce Staley. Shurmur served as the interim head coach after Chip Kelly‘s firing in Week 17, while Staley is Philadelphia’s running backs coach.

McAdoo and Coughlin received plenty of buzz this week for the Eagles’ job, with at least one report suggesting he would have been the choice if he hadn’t withdrawn. However, a weekend report indicated that Pederson initially entered the process as owner Jeffrey Lurie’s favorite among non-head coaches. After McAdoo and Coughlin became unavailable, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reported that the Eagles had moved on to pursuing Pederson.

Culley's the Assistant Head Coach. I doubt Chilly leaves Andy, especially since he's the most likely OC candidate.

Bienemy's not a QB coach, nor is he an OC.

Rapaport just said that Andy Reid gave Pederson more playcalling responsibilities this year.

Bienemy's not a QB coach, nor is he an OC.

Not disputing, just thinking out loud here, so wouldn't Culley be next in line to take over at OC if he's already assistant head coach? Seems like a more sensible transition from that opposed to Childress taking everything over from "special project" or "spread game analyst" or whatever.

And I feel like Childress would be a more welcomed hire for Pederson with his experience and name being known and all.

Just trying to look at it from Philly's perspective.

This doesn't even make sense.

Cully has zero experience has an offensive coordinator. He's also the Assistant Head Coach which means he can't be hired by another team unless his contract has expired (it hasn't) or he's hired as a head coach, which he wasn't.

The most successful run of Reid's career occurred when Brad Childress was his offensive coordinator. Unless Childress doesn't want the job (which would be extremely odd), he's clearly the obvious choice.

I hope Andy Reid goes outside of the organization to add a coach.

Doesn't have to necessarily be the OC but i want some new blood in here.

Preferably someone who will encourage some innovation in our offense.

Andy Reid's been a head coach for 17 years in the NFL and has a record of 161-110-1 and running.

I seriously doubt he changes anything about the offense.

So everything Philly wanted to get away from when they fired Andy and hired Chip they are now bringing back 3 years later but with no head coaching experience and less talent on the roster that fit said system.

Andy Reid won't be in charge of personnel.
