Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started. Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Diet is the greatest factor, not time.
If I want to build, which I'm doing now, I cut the cardio in half and do reps. 3 days lifting with a one mile warmup, one cardio day at 4.25 miles. If I want to cut and drop fat, slight diet tweak, 2.5 miles before 1 set of 20 at each station. 4 days full body lifting, 1 cardio day with an 8 mile hike to get some sun on my rocking abs. Thank you.
