Bad news
SimplyRed started a thread about me not long ago. I thought I'd start one with the latest. I got very bad news today. My colon cancer got into my liver and the doc said it is stage 4. She said it can't be cured. Without treatment, I might last 10 weeks. Even with chemo, the best I could hope for is maybe 3 years. I'm scheduled to have a port put in tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1 pm. They start me on 3 types of chemo on Thursday.

Losing your independence would mean losing your ability to choose your care.

Choosing to have the pros do it is like me choosing to pay someone else to change the oil in my car. Doesn't mean I'm not independent, means I'm outsourcing.

For all the crap you have to deal with in terms of the cancer, you're choosing to not have to deal with something. Sounds like independence to me.

I have a plan B if needed for Sunday. If the homecare nurse can't come and change my dressing, I have a friend who is a hospice nurse and she said she will come and do it since I have the materials needed here with me. That made me feel a lot better.

Thank goodness for your friend. You should not have to be going through this alone. I mean, we are with you, but we can't be with you. Moral support is nice but isn't enough. You need real support too.

She came out and changed my dressing Wednesday because when I went to the doc for a follow up, they didn't have the blue foam that they stuff into my chest wound. I guess I should have brought that with me? I also caught a break of sorts. I got a call that they wanted to put another port in me on Friday (today) and since that would screw up my Thanksgiving with me not being able to safely lift over 5 lbs. for 10 or 11 days, I said that didn't work. Now it is set for Dec. 1st instead.

Today is the day and I am about to head to the hospital for the new port. I hope they put it on the left side of my chest this time, so at least I will have some symmetry with the scars. I've been worried about this, in particular getting another infection. I sure hope I don't. It has been brutal dealing with the effects of the one I had almost a month ago. My chest wound is closing up, though, and the blue foam stuff they put in there doesn't hurt as much when the nurse yanks it out. I hope I am done with that stuff soon and just need a simple bandage over it.

Yup, make sure to ask what the maximum you can do to prevent infection is and take close care of it. Ask nurses and MDs, the surgeon, anyone. Follow the directions exactly - not too much, not too little. Since you're fresh off the treatment of the last one you should be lower risk for SSI this time around...
