We'll see how it plays out. I do agree with you that I think this is all reactionary (if it's really how it looks, and not just negotiating through the press). I don't think they picked up Dee Ford last year to replace him, even if it turns out that way.
There is if Houston was already gone.

If Houston's willing to sign at $14-15million/season for the next 5 years and the Chiefs aren't willing to do so, then I think the Chiefs are being unreasonable. However, if Houston's holding firm and won't take less than something in the $18-20 million/season range - he's gone. Maclin doesn't change that, the dude was gone anyway.

Pretty much agree with this. Houston benefited this year from 2 things he may or may not have on another team. Poe and Hali. Those 2 create opportunities for Houston he might not otherwise have.

Now don't get me wrong, Houston is a stud.

This is why I put up the poll.

I'd absolutely take Maclin, Revis, and say... the Jets' next two first round picks.

We could be looking at an offseason netting us:

Jeremy Maclin
Derrelle Revis
Clint Boling
Vic Beasly
Cam Erving
Jaelen Strong/Nelson Agholor/Phillip Dorsett

And that's just in the first 50 picks. We would also have two thirds, two fifths this year and two firsts next year.

Then you draft a QB in 2016 to replace Smith.

Or **** it and just draft Mariota.

You can't continually cycle through your roster. It just doesn't work. When you have someone playing a key position (namely QB or pass rusher) who is truly great at their job, and I think Houston has shown that he is, you have to build around them, not try to build with the compensation you get from from trading them. The reality is that first round picks guarantee absolutely nothing. It's as likely if not more likely you're giving up Justin Houston for Jon Baldwin and Eric Fisher, or Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson, than it is you're giving him up for Eric Berry and Dontari Poe.

I'm not conservative by nature - hell I've been calling for a high pick young QB for the last fifteen years - but the reality is that sometimes the bird in hand really is worth two in the bush. And I think this is one of those situations.

if Houston wants JJ Watt or Suh money ... to me, it's simple

tag him for $13M this year
tag him for $16M next year

move on in 2018

...and if he wants to hold out until week 10 or play with a grudge or half ass it to show us up ... then all he does is ruin his earning potential in 2018

I'll take 2 years $29M for Houston and an eventual 3rd round compensation pick over what Miami just did to get Suh 100 times out of 100

I don't think we have enough information to even postulate what the bidding is right now.

I did however say I'd trade him next year if it looks like anything beyond is impossible, so I agree to some degree, at least in spirit.

At the end of the day I just don't think Maclin is theoretically as valuable to the franchise as Houston, looking long term. Hopefully he changes my mind about that. Right now I'm seeing it more in the light of yet another move to try and support/justify the Alex Smith misstep. And that kind of move scares me a bit. It almost has a sort of Vermeil flavor to it.

We'll see what else they do. And it's still entirely possible that we're all here in early August wondering why we thought Houston didn't want to be here.

I agree. I am really concerned about the OL and that was before Hudson left. They barely could protect AS last year and he had a career year in sacks.

I never thought they'd be able to structure a deal to get Maclin to bite (honestly, an $11 AAV with what will almost certainly contain heavy backloading is a coup for Dorsey here).

I DEFINITELY don't see a way that could structure a deal to get Revis to bite. He has no history with Reid or with Missouri. He's the #1 CB in the league coming off a Super Bowl championship.

That dude is going to get paid, paid up front and paid HUGE. Too much mandatory spending. As foolhardy as I think the Maclin signing might be, a Revis signing would be flat out ****ing insane. We'll have to gut this team by 2018 if that happens.
