Oh come on. Kim made that basketball team fun as hell to watch. The Arkansas State guy they replaced him with ain't bad either.

My wife's Alma mater is UCM, and she's a huge bball fan. I think she was more upset than all Mizzou fans combined when Kim left.

The guy is even more of a disaster than I thought he'd be. I figured he at least would be able to do a decent job coaching the kids he inherited, before descending into a mid-to-late-90s type swoon/death spiral.

Here's a great look at similar progression from other schools.

Here's a great look at similar progression from other schools.

Those schools likely brought in better talent than Cullen VanLeer, Kevin Puryear and Brandon Phillips, though, to supplement the roster.

Indiana for sure landed some elite talent. Baylor did. Purdue did. Michigan did. Not sure about Washington or wvu, but I would bet they did, too.
They all also held onto all the key guys that were already on the roster. Missouri seems unlikely to do that. Isabell is out for sure, Gant is likely, wright and Gill-Caesar are possibilities.

I posted this on PM, and it got deleted in under a minute.

Norm Stewart retired 16 years ago. He was born in Missouri and coached until he was in his mid sixties. He was a basketball coach, and his players looked to this middle aged guy from the heartland to shape them into men.

When he left, Mizzou underwent a rigorous search for the next coach. They settled on Quinn Snyder...a young, perfectly pressed man from the East coast and a hell of a pedigree. In short, he was the polar opposite of Norm. This was the guy that was now tasked with coaching basketball and turning 18-22 year olds into men. It was a disaster, though. This slick dude from the East coast loved cocaine and coeds (allegedly), and he flamed out in a scandal involving drugs, players in jail, and probation.

Suddenly, the university had to find a new man to coach basketball and teach 18-22 year old men how to live right. Enter Mike Anderson. Forget the slick, young, handsome dude from the East coast who was supposed to teach you right from wrong. This middle aged black guy from the south now represents our values. Follow him, and you will become loyal men of character and commitment. Well...every time someone offered to raise his salary by tree fiddy, he was all ears. Eventually, he left for Arkansas suitcase in tow, and Mizzou was again tasked with finding a new leader.

We went back to our roots and found a nerdy white guy from the Midwest. Forget that old black dude who always had one foot out the door. THIS guy will coach you into, basketball players and men. Do as Matt Painter says, and he will...God Damn It.

Scratch that. Forget all about that dopey white dude from the Midwest. Your new coach that you will obey as you are shaped into men is a little black dude from Miami. This guy will teach you 18-22 year olds how to be men. OOPS...turns out he's embroiled in a huge scandal. We're just going to let his contract expire and hope he leaves quietly...whew.

Okay...screw that idiot. I hope you didn't pay too much attention to him, because he was corrupt and disloyal. Bad news all around... It doesn't matter that you're a bunch of young black men who committed to the little black dude from Miami. You committed to the University of Missouri, and you need to do things the Missouri way...which is now a 60 year old dude from Missouri. You will learn basketball from this man. More importantly, this guy will teach you 18-22 year olds how to be a man. You will do as he says, or you will be run out the door because, by God, college basketball coaches are perfect role models who should be treated with supreme obedience as they teach you self control, discipline, loyalty, stability, and how to sit in chairs...and if there's any time left over, basketball.

So yeah...I'm going to cut these dudes a little slack if they don't immediately exhibit supreme allegiance to a guy most of them had never heard of when they chose Mizzou. Maybe...just maybe they weren't looking for some stranger to teach them how to sit in chairs, shave, dress, etc. Maybe they just wanted someone who could coach them into a top 200 basketball team.

And that is the problem with sites like PM. They have developed inroads on a product that has a distinct value, but they are absolutely terrible at original reporting and objective reporting.

Because those sites are so dependent upon the University for their product they refuse to cover it with any pretense of objectivity.

I'm approaching full manifesto mode. My next soon to be deleted post:

He keeps talking about turning his players into men. *WTF?

Take a hypothetical situation that's totally hypothetical. *You grow up in poverty...but you can play basketball, and that's your ticket out. *Maybe someone wants you to move halfway across the country to play basketball at some random school and says you can bring your mom. *You've got 100 different people in your ear telling you what to do. *That doesn't even include grown men on the Internet constantly sending you messages.

Some of these people want to give your mom enough money to keep her off the street if you'll play for their team. *Others want to convince you not to take a dime...lest you taint the integrity of the game...and cost a bunch of old white millionaires who become even wealthier off of kids playing for no actual salaries a lot of money. *On the one hand, your mom could have a warm place to come home to at night. *On the other hand, those rich dudes could be sanctioned. *

And that's the choice you have had to make. *You have to choose between your integrity and your mother's well-being. *And the course of the rest of your life is impacted by your decision.

Suddenly, some old white dude wants to tell you that you don't know how to be a man because you don't sit in a chair the way he likes...or you wear a hat at the table. *Are you going to take him seriously?

Yeah, but that old white dude doesn't demand that they shave daily, so he's actually going pretty soft on them.

Asking these players to take life lessons from the revolving door of characters straight out of the Cantina Scene is like a two dollar whore telling her kids to call every trick she turns "daddy".

The Kim Anderson gestapo cannot be gone soon enough. I am all for life lessons but you can probably do that in a way that is not taking the kids off the court. Our coaches used to run us, or do wall jumps or make us pick up trash around the school. There has to be other methods of getting through on these things.
