Lego Hobbit with the boy. I'm surprised at how much fun we're having with it (I didn't enjoy the Harry Potter Lego series very much).
There's a scene where you're moving up a storm giant solving puzzles as it fights with another stone giant that is pretty awesome.

Game Review - Valiant Hearts: The Great War - PS4
Valiant Hearts: The Great War
Rarely did I ever get very invested in smaller games or indie-type games but I was perusing the free offers for my PS Now membership and this title looked interesting. Valiant Hearts is a 2D side view style of game that focuses on storytelling and puzzles. As you've probably guessed, it focuses on the "video game taboo" subject of WWI. (I really wish a dev group would make a video game focusing on this great, yet terrible war but more on that later). The game focuses on a group of people banded together across enemy lines by family ties and the strong bonds of friendship carved by warfare. You play as four different characters... Karl, a German immigrant that was living in France until the start of the war. He was deported and drafted into the German army. He left his wife, newborn son and father in law behind. Emile, Karl's father in law. He was drafted by the French military as an engineer. Freddie, Karl's best friend. An american who enlisted in the French army after his wife was killed in a german bombing raid. Anna, a battlefield nurse who's father was kidnapped by Germans for his scientific knowledge. Along for the ride is a faithful medic dog, (Doberman) named Walt. He's needed to assist with several puzzles during gameplay and you become quite attached to him, (even though he can get on your last nerve occasionally). Most characters have a common goal, defeat their prime enemy and get home. Karl ends up being a POW and you never really play his character until then, (not really a spoiler). The gameplay is nothing special, here. The puzzles won't take long to figure out and I almost found them a bit irritating at times because they'd interrupt this game's beautiful story. While the characters are a little cartoonish, it's. It something you really end up caring about. They're drawn beautifully and you can tell the artists were trying to accentuate some stereotypical features of the French and German soldiers. Things like big beards, blonde hair and barrel-chests. The art designs of battlefields, city backdrops, trenches and weapons really get it right. It gives people that know nothing of this horrid war a slight idea of the misery these men endured. The colors are vibrant but still give it an older feeling by becoming focused on the immediate surroundings. The soundtrack to this game is extremely appropriate at most times. Dark, beautiful and engrossing. It really sums up what music people listened to in the early 1900's. Now then, there is a level or two that was used as comic relief of sorts and the soundtrack gets a little goofy but it works. I have to admit that I was extremely amazed when I found out that this is a Ubisoft title. This isn't something they usually do these days. No micro-transactions? You don't need UPlay? No DLC??? WTF? They did something right? Wow! Now then, I have to say that there is very little replayability here. It's a game you'll play for a couple days, beat it and not go back for a year. It's basically like a good movie. Once you've seen it, it'll take a while before you want to do it again. On that note, I have to say it was a pleasure to play. Something different for me and as a WWI junkie, I appreciated it. You can pick this title up for ten bucks and it's well worth it. I give it a solid 8 out of 10. It's hurt a little by the lack of replayability and some of the annoying puzzles that get a little old after a bit. However, a beautiful game and something new from a huge AAA developer. Good for them. Side note... Regarding WWI games: I totally get that the Great War isn't romantic or popular. It was a terrible thing and that's not game material for most COD fanbois. However, if anyone out there has the ****ing balls to finally do it, I'll be your first customer. Think about it, how many of our 14 year old kids know what their great-great grandfathers went through there? One out of fifty maybe? Tell the story for chrissakes. Let's see what you've got. Can you imagine a FPS in the trenches, using a parascope? Water-cooled machine guns and zeppelins? Biplanes and mustard gas? Very cool stuff there and worth the time. |

I loved Valiant Heart. Superbunnyhop got me on it. I think he was overly critical.

Agreed. I can get with some of the stuff he said but he was a little harsh.

I know, right? Seriously though. They must've had an indie dev work this somehow. It's really pretty damn good man. Worth a look.
