And we didn't go for it. We stood pat. Weren't you advocating trading for Marlon Byrd (who sucked down the stretch) who would have replaced Aoki (who carried us for a stretch)?

It's a strange stance to have when you predicted us to win 80 games and we were right on pace for that around the trade deadline. I'd love to see your firm stance on going for that playoff berth. I think the only guy I remember who was appalled by the fact we were all talking about selling Shields was tk13. I think we were 3.5 games out of WC #2 and he pretty much said there was no way Dayton was going to trade Shields and admit failure. He was right. Props to him. But yeah, I'd love to see some of those posts, PB. |

Asking. Trying to figure out what "going for" any of our options at the time would have done in hindsight.

...clearly, with the benefit of hindsight, I would have elected not to trade for a guy who was going to die in a few months Hell, for the 19th time, the only reason I even suggested the trade was because of the preposterous return the Cubs got on Jeff Samardzija. and had the Cardinals pulled the trigger for Shields and a real closer, they might have ended up winning the WS last year ... so if they wanted to give us a long term superstar prospect for 1/2 season of a solid #2 and 2.5 seasons of an elite closer (when we had 2 elite closers to take his spot), hell yeah...all for it and not that it matters, but duncan_idaho agreed with me when PB brought this up the last time, although he also stated there is no way the Cardinals would have done this deal |

No reason to; I'm not the one trying to call someone else a "Tard".

Can't we try to move on from this and not clutter up great, fun threads with a played-out internet argument?
Yes, the Cardinals were highly unlikely to trade Oscar Taveras for 1/2 season of James Shields and 1.5 seasons of Greg Holland. But in that environment, it wasn't a crazy thing to suggest considering what the A's had just given up for 1/2 season of an inferior pitcher. Yes, the Royals would have made out like bandits in that deal. They probably don't make the playoff run last year but also have added another great young player to the roster at a very low cost for a long period of time. It didn't happen. Oscar Taveras died. James Shields played out the year with KC and Greg Holland still is a Royal. Let's move past it, shall we?

No, I'm not moving on so long as the drunk continues to call me out for "doubting" the Royals after he did. Sorry Duncan.
I'm pretty shocked you think we'd have "made out like bandits" on that. That's sheer nonsense. There are no sure prospects in MLB, absolutely none. And to slough it off as "we probably don't make that run" is not only an incredible understatement, it would've prevented the most important year the franchise ever had. Yes: ever. |
