Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Data is still on the box. Its just stops pinging. The Air India crash black box wasn't found for 2 years it still rendered useful info.

That's the thing that I don't get. It sounds like some data was already doing that, but why not all? And it sounds like the data that was being sent was a private sector thing and not an air safety thing.

I guess we need all the satellite capacity so people can text each other pictures of kittens.

QFT

Without kitten texts the world will only be a shell of its former self. This means the terrorists have won.

Donger explained it all.

Ignoring that there IS a solution if someone wanted to make it a priority.

Absolutely. Hell, my airline doesn't even give me free TV anymore. They sure as shooting aren't going to willingly install Inmarsat VSATs on the planes and pay for the data plans.

hard for me to believe in this theory.. How can a 777, Follow another Commercial plane, by trying to stay "undetected" but not ram into the other commercial flight when it changes speed/altitude?? The 777 isn't a easy maneuverable plane so the minute the commercial flight in front of him changes speed or altitude the 777 would either FLY by quickly or fall back fast and be picked up on radars, he would have to be somewhat extremely close for 5hours+ with another flight that isn't even in on this "operation" and are just flying normally..

Okay. I'll trust his judgment.

It sounds like we have an appalling lack of cell towers in the ocean. I bet that if we put cell towers out there, they'd have all sorts of uses. Air safety, flyer cell calls and internet, and a great reef system for fish. They might interfere with whale migrations, though.

Now that I think about it, I've been on airlines recently that are offering internet service to flyers. How are they hooking up? Is that only when you're flying over the U S of A?

Frontier Airlines? Man, I haven't flown them since the sale, and was on a flight last week. I think they were actively trying to give me the worst flying experience possible, and it was all part of their new system. I may be actively avoiding Frontier for a while.

Yep. They keep taking perks away from their Summit members. About the only thing keeping me with them is that I get the Stretch seating free.

I flew Southwest a few weeks ago, and they are still Southwest.

So, it's Frontier or United for me.

To a layman I dont know. To a Pilot with this much flying time maybe a peace of cake.

yeah, tbh I think it just stalled out at 45,000 ft and then crashed A lot like Air france flight 447...

I mean people are saying it went WAYY passed its ceiling to 45000ft or whatever? If that really happened... its not like they were all the way up there hiding from someone I think something just broke on the plane making them lose all power or something just like Air france flight 447 and then they were just in a climb, and once they hit a certain elevation im sure they just stalled out and gradually fell and crashed. I mean think about it.. first they were at 45000ft then went back down to 24000ft? Sounds like a apparent stall at 45,000 and then descending at X amount of Ft per minute till crashing..

I mean I don't know if the 45,000ft, and 24,000ft is true that's just what ive been reading on here and hearing.

If Southwest would assign me a seat I'd use them. But I hate the stress of finding my own seat. Will my seatmates like me? Will I have to sit next to a 1.4-seat obese person? I don't like the feeling of racing other people just to sit next to the 90-pound Asian woman. Just charge me ten bucks more and give me a seat.

Frontier was my favorite airline at one point, but wow, this new system is horrific. It felt like being a prisoner in a POW camp. They're stalking around and making people put their carry-ons in the box, and I think the gate agent gets a commission for each person she screws over with a $100 "gate fee".

United is probably going to get my business whenever I have a choice, but I wish I could tolerate Southwest's seating system better.
