News Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people - Page 41

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Those pilots would have to have been the best of the best 777 pilots, taking a plane like that higher than its service ceiling. I would of been all they could of handled just to keep it flying at that point.

I thought it was reported to have happened right after they turned around and prior to dropping to 24K.

You know I have no idea. I remember a few years ago pilots of a beechjet took it past its service ceiling and the engines flamed out.

They drilled it into the ground in Missouri somewhere if I remember correctly.

Since any such system would have to be VSAT-based, I would imagine the reason for it not being done is cost and bandwidth.

I read somewhere that taking the plane that high would effectively knock the passengers out.

A fast, hassle free way of getting control of the passengers.

Not as long as the cabin was still pressurized and O2 was being delivered.

GoGo is currently 10Mbps per vessel. It is supposed to be upgraded this year to ??.

You could get a lot more than nothing, which is the current amount, with that bw.

Probably has a week left. The Media will get bored with it when the people get bored with it.

We'll here about it again 5-10 years from now when it's accidentally discovered at the bottom of the ocean.

Again. It's the same reason the radios can be turned off -if it's broken and transmitting signals that **** up everyone else's regular use then it has to be able to be disabled.
